"I wonder how he like's Carolina Blue" Fairley Thread

Guys, regardless of how bad our offense was this season, Defensive Tackle is BY FAR, WITHOUT A DOUBT, UNQUESTIONABLY our biggest need on this team. It's not even close. Yes, we could get better at WR, but we drafted three of those last year. We don't need to pick one #1 overall. Gettis, Lafell and Smitty are fine. The biggest problems with our offense were 1. Offensive Coordinator and 2. Quarterback, not receiver. We're going to hire a new OC and without Luck in the draft we will not be taking a QB #1. I'm sure Green will do well in the NFL but it's just not a smart pick for us.

Bowers will be good as well, but Johnson/Hardy/Brayton/Brown is a strong DE group and we don't need another one. Yes, it would be nice to get another dominating DE but if Hardy is what we think he is it would be a wasted pick.

No, Fairley is not Suh. But he's one of the best talents in the draft, he's the best DT in the draft, and he's a dominating force on the field. He also addresses our biggest need. Is he dirty? Sure. But so is Steve Smith, so is Tyler Brayton. Dirty play on the field does not equate to being a bad character guy off the field. Picking Fairley #1 just absolutely makes sense.

disagree.. we will help out defense more by getting Orton and Green.. addressing both issues and ensuring a dangerous threat at WR for years, regardless how many picks we spent last year.. those are the only picks we've spent in 10 years, of course at some point we need to make up for it.. Smitty is irrelevant in this decision, because he isn't #1 and Gettis isn't either..

yes, we need a DT, but this isn't the only year we can address DT.. it is the only year we'll be able to ****** up an incredible WR talent..

just my opinion though..

Now, you may have an argument that Fairley is the best player to address a neet... but I disagree with your thought that DT in general is our biggest need. There is no possible way you can say that "it's not even close." Were you watching Jimmy Clausen this year?? The best we can hope for is that he turns into something mediocre at this point and not downright horrible. Not only is quarterback the most important position, I think it is easily our weakest right now.

What makes you think AJ Green is automatically going to be a #1? A lot of the highly touted WR's from last year's draft fell short of expectations, and none of them were #1's. Sure, maybe some of them could have been and maybe they will be in the future, but WR is a HUGE risk/reward in the draft. IMO, Gettis and Lafell showed a lot of promise their rookie year in a pathetically bad offensive system with horrible QB play. Give them a competent OC and a good QB and they'll be very productive. Offenses around the league have done more with less. This draft is deep at WR and we can get a good prospect later in the draft if we choose to.

lol.

People have been crying for a DT since the Giants game in '08. Now, we've got the chance to take one, people are shying away from it.

I think Fairley has to be our guy. Sure, AJ Green and Patrick Peterson have to be in the mix, but after tonight, I don't think that Cam Newton needs to be. The guy didn't play very well tonight, and looked like he was hurting after taking hits from Oregon players, imagine him taking a couple of hits from John Abraham, Johnathon Vilma, or Barrett Ruud.

And as a side note: For the people who keep saying that Fairley can't be our guy because of his character issues, have you people never heard of the problems Cam Newton has had? Fairley gets a personal foul or two, Cam Newton gets ruled ineligible because of a pay-to-play scheme, and Fairley is the bad guy?

You have a good argument, but there aren't any QB's even close to the talent level of Fairley, Peterson, Bowers or Green. Gabbert or Mallett won't be upgrades over Jimmy. We won't be drafting a QB first overall, mark my words. There are some good QB options in free agency and I think we'll go that route.

I'm sorry but Green has shown consistent production since he stepped on the college field. I'm not comfortable taking a one year wonder with the #1 pick. Sure Fairley has had a great season but that's a big risk to take. Same goes for Bowers.

Without Smitty in the lineup this year Clausen passed to a tune of 61 yards. That is embarrassing. Green provides a threat on the field when Smitty is not. Now picture both of them together.

With that being said, it is possible to draft Fairley since we hired a defensive minded coach. None the less, our Defense performed admirably while always being on the field and without a standout DT. I believe Rivera will be able to bring in a few FA DTs and pick a few out of the draft which seems to be pretty deep. Would you rather have a defensive guru draft offensive players with mid-late round draft choices to help the league's worst offense or use those picks in an area he specializes in for a top 15 defense?
