"I wonder how he like's Carolina Blue" Fairley Thread

DT is the second most dominant position aside from quarteback. At least that's what I've heard. Closest of any defensive player to the ball. High chance at being a bust and doesn't upgrade our historically poor offense. However fairley looks to me a little better than Gerald McCoy not quite so good as Suh.

I applaud you for your proper use of "dominant."

how does Fairley compare to Gerald Mccoy or other recent DTs who have come out? anyone know? haven't looked much at the lines in this draft.

last year, McCoy was compared to Sapp ( that's who he idolized growing up), but I don't feel that McCoy plays with that "mean streak" that sapp did in his prime.....That fear that opposing players saw when they lined up in the trenches across from Sapp. I agree with CaliPanther in that Fairley compares more to McCoy, and probably falls in between McCoy and Suh. Suh is just a ridiculous talent that comes along the way Manning did for QB's or Ray Lewis did for LB'ers.... dude is just off the charts, yet has a solid brain bouncing around his helmet. From what I've seen of Fairley, he's a passionate player that is phenomenal at shedding blocks, has several moves, wicked strong, is always around the ball and punishes the ball carrier. I've heard that he takes plays off, but haven't seen enough to agree or disagree with it. As far as the dirty talk, I'd say it's more along the lines of intensity, and I think this team needs an injection of intensity that Fairley brings.

Pick two of these jokers and draft Green, Rivera!!!!!

:)

Most of the DT's that would be expected to make an immediate impact will be long gone by our 3rd round pick, and the ones that are still available shouldn't be counted on to make much of an impact as a rookie, much less be starter quality.

As for the FA's, there is a very good chance that the CBA won't be signed by the time of the draft, so we'll have no idea who we can get. Some of these guys will likely be re-signed by their current team, while the rest will have more suitors than just us. So there will be no way to know if we can get any to sign with us...or even if they would want to. It could be mid-summer before we can sign our first FA.

On top of it all, none of these guys has anywhere near Fairley's natural ability to get penetration and disrupt plays. Of course, they have proven they can play in the NFL while no rookie is a guarantee, but with any top pick there is the assumption that they will be able to make the transition. So that arguement would apply no matter who we pick.

Bottom line, we cannot pass on someone we are guaranteed to get that fills a dire need for the hope we can fill the position later.

And I wouldn't pass on a guy that can replace 89 and be as exciting and productive as he has been in his career. Neither Gettis or LeFell are #1 WR, Smith is out or playing the slot and who knows about AE.

I really like Fairley but he hasn't declared, there are plenty of possibly DT choices in draft and FA, our O was #32 in the NFL; I wouldn't pass on AJ Green.

How do you know Gettis and Lafell can't be #1 WR's? They showed just as much as any rookie WR this year except for a guy like Dez Bryant. They both made plays in a handicapped offensive system and showed great potential. That, coupled with the fact that WR's usually don't even break out til their 2nd or 3rd year makes me confident that one of these two guys will step up to be a big time playmaker. Also, there are plenty of WR options in the draft and FA just like DT. But if we can get a top guy with the first pick and address our biggest need, we have to do it. The pick should be Fairley.

there's a thought that keeps popping in my head and it's usually when I hear people ask why Gettis and LaFell can't be #1..

that thought is how ingrained we are to the John Fox system..

And in that system, Gettis is a legit #1 receiver if you have a guy like Smitty..

in an attacking offense, however, you need a young Smitty (for the sake of imagery) and a guy like Gettis and LaFell..

what we have is an old Smitty, Gettis and LaFell.. You need a real threat out there like Smitty use to be, where he can beat double coverage rather consistently..

Gettis, LaFell, and Smitty cannot do that at the moment.. perhaps they turn into that, but we must make it important to find another playmaker at WR..

settling for the 3 guys we have now is only going to bring about profits of mediocrity..

Gettis is a solid #3 in a Manning offense.. he is a solid #1 in a John Fox offense..

You guys are joking, right? Even the amazing AJ Green would have looked piss poor in our offense this past season. You can't honestly be negatively judging Lafell and Gettis based solely on their rookie years in the worst offense known to man.

that's subjective.. we'll find out this year, including him having a year to grow as a receiver.. if he turns out to have solid #2 numbers, then he isn't what you are saying he is..

what is not a joke is that if you want to score more points, you need more threats to give the defense more to think about..

The point has nothing to do so much with Gettis and LaFell's talent as much as it does with we need a true #1.. they are not that, whether you want to believe it or not.. the collective group is what I'm discussing.. while you all keep focusing on just those 2..

we need more than 3 decent receivers... 1 extra threat would be nice.. whether it's Green or Malcom Floyd..

any debate against Malcom Floyd? Concerned with how he would look last year? if not, then get over it all and accept we need 1 real threat..
