"I wonder how he like's Carolina Blue" Fairley Thread

As exciting as it would be to see fairley's and beason's personalities together on the same defense another thing to consider is the long term. Not only are defensive tackles the highest busting position they also are the most short lived careers. At least from the defensive side of the ball.

WR's have bigger bust potential than DT's do, so if you're going to address a need in the draft and the best WR and DT on the board grade out the same, then a betting man would draft the DT... it's as simple as that.

True. WR's have one of the highest bust rates in the draft.

It's been put simply and repeated a few times on here--if Green and Fairley are equal in talent, and even if Green is slightly better, the smart thing to do is pick based on need. DT is a much bigger need than WR.

Gettis and Lafell outperformed most rookie WR's this year. They both showed great promise in an abysmal offense with abysmal QB play. Plenty of teams in the league put together great passing games without standout WR's. How many elite wideouts are there in the league? Maybe five? There aren't just five good passing teams. Green is good but doesn't address our needs as well as Fairley.

Also, I'm interested to hear an argument from those who say that we should pick Bowers first overall. He's not any more talented than Green or Fairley, and DE is far down our list of needs. Johnson/Hardy/Brown/Brayton is a fine DE group and if we bring in a penetrating DT they will look elite.

Yeah, our whole defense would look pretty elite as a whole, imo the only big weakness would be a #2 corner. I say take Fairley which could turn our D elite and suffer another year of an awful offense and then we could have a good chance to get Barkley or Luck next year. It's just I really think Fairley could put our D on a whole new level. Like I said a #2 corner would be the main missing piece and you can usually fine one of those in the 2nd or 3rd round.

...and we play in a division with 2 elite QB's and one on the rise, so we need a DT that can collapse the pocket and keep these guys from picking us apart.

We're not going to win scoring shootouts with New Orleans and Atlanta anytime soon, so we might as well focus on defense.
