and I'm not sure, but I think there is rollover from last year... maybe they are already included.. some are 3-4 DT's, but it's not like we haven't went there before.. It was pretty ingrained in our DLine philosophy for quite a while..

You also have to take in account the new free agent rule that will be implemented with the CBA.

Those guys that are RFAs? They won't be RFAs until next season.

I think many are overrating Green. Sure, he's good, but he doesn't compare to CJ, AJ, or Moss. One big knock on Green is that he does not have particularly good lower body strength, which will make getting off the jam more difficult that the bigger Johnson's. And he's not anywhere near Moss's league in terms of speed. Don't get me wrong, he good, but he's not so good that he's a slam dunk.

Fairley is to Suh what Green is to CJ.

In terms of talent: Fairley = Green. And even if you want to think Green is better, it would only be by a smidge. They are so close to each other's talent level (in their respective positions) that it comes down to who actually fills the greater need.

That's exactly my line of reasoning.

So, which one (either Fairley or Green) fills the bigger need?

Fairley by a mile.

Dorsey is playing well in that Chiefs 34...;)

Yea he is coming along nicely it took him about 3 years to get there though and hes not making the impact he could at the undertackle position. A better example would be Warren Sapp at Oakland before they switched to a 4-3 for him.

Oh, and for those of you that are excited about bringing in Rivera's attacking style of defense, you do realize that in order for that to work, we need a penetrating DT. And right now, that's something that is missing here. Also, despite what some may think, there is not a penetrating DT anywhere near Fairley's potential available in FA. And even if we do get a solid DT in FA, we'd still need another starter. Other than QB, I don't think anyone can rationally argue that DT is not our greatest weakness.

We have decent WR's, but don't have one solid starter at DT currently on our roster. Now in the draft, we have a WR and penetrating DT of comparible talent competing for the #1 pick...I think it's obvious which one fills a need and which one is a luxury.

If there's no CBA in place by the draft (and many don't expect there will be), can you guarantee that we would get our choice of DT, or even one of the better ones? I don't mean do you think we will or can, but can you guarantee it?

Don't worry, I already know the answer...no, you can't guarantee that we'll get a viable starter in FA, much less the two we need. Nor should we expect a 3rd round or later DT to be able to step in and fill our most pressing need. And if you can't guarantee a starting Defensive Tackle, then you're taking a monumental risk of JR proportions to pass on an almost sure thing at the position...for a luxury.

Don't let assumptions doom this team, much like the assumption that we would pursue Harbaugh and get Luck doomed us to heartbreak.

This. Rivera needs a big, penetrating DT for his system to be in full affect and if we take Green this year than a QB next year there is no telling when we would have a shot at drafting a guy like Fairley again. I know Green is going to be great, but so is Fairley and he fills a bigger need. He's big, strong, has a great first step. I mean just the little things he did last night helped Auburn in so many ways, I mean he basically caused that safety by knocking the guard and center down, allowing his teammate into the backfield. He is just a mean, nasty beast that can wreak havoc down on the defensive front. Take Fairley, be smart...I would be pretty upset if we traded this pick.

Thats what FA is for and the draft is really deep with Day 1 (now actually Day 2) talent.

holla! my feelings are you can find that DT in FA.. there aren't any WRs with Green's potential who are going to realistically be available..

DT might be a bigger need but I don't think Fairley will be able to make an immediate impact on the team like we would need him to. Even he will need developing and he will take time. I think quality veteran DT's would be a wiser choice because they will have a more guaranteed impact on the team. There are also guys that can be had in the later rounds.

On the other hand Green will not be the #1 WR but he will certainly be used. His talent alone can create favorable mismatches even as a rookie, and should definitely help open up the other WR's.

I feel like it's so much simpler than we're making it out to be.

We have the first pick in the entire draft so now matter who is the best, we have first crack at that player.

Next, evaluate needs -- DT, CB, WR, OL, QB

Is there a player that meets needs at #1? Yes. DT is number one need, and there is a mean-ass DT sitting there in a diluted draft with no clear cut number one.

Yes, Green is in play, but barring terrible showings and combine workouts by Fairley, he should be a Panther. A sick interior force with a lot of confidence and has no problem punishing opposing players does not fall in your lap every year. Yes, Fairley is not Suh, but Sapp/Jenkins/Haynesworth he is, and will anchor our line and allow our salivating linebackers and defensive ends to thrive for years to come.
