He could still turn out to be a decent quarterback and, either way, we're going to trade for or sign a solid veteran QB (Orton or Kolb, for example). Another Rookie QB is NOT what we need. If we pick #1 it will be Bowers, Green, Fairley or Peterson.

ESC and Baschski are right on the money.

According to Scouts, Inc the best 4 players on the board right now are:

DaQuan Bowers DE

Nick Fairley DT

Patrick Petersen CB

AJ Green WR

Scouts, Inc had them all graded at 97, so according to Scouts, Inc it really just comes down to a question of need...

We have all kinds of needs, but I would rate DE as our lowest need of these 4 positions right now. We have Smitty and two promising young prospects at WR, so I would rate WR as the second lowest need.

That leaves Fairley and Petersen as the players who could address our most gaping needs. Marshall is as good as gone, Gamble struggled some last year, Munnerlyn has been promising. If Gamble can return to form, then he an Munnerlyn could potentially be a solid starting set of CB's. Landri has shown some promise at DT, but he's probably a rotational player at best. DT is the only position right now where it's hard to find a positive beyond Landri, who is a rotational player, so I think it's clear that Fairley fills our biggest need. It's also important to consider that a good pass rush can make average CB's look great, but a bad pass rush can make great CB's look average.

Based on all this, I think Fairley is our guy.

A dude on the local sports radio was doing an interview with someone down in Arizona just after the BCS title game, and said that with fairly's performance last night some people may be willing to trade with us. I would be more open to that now than ever. What I did learn last night is that Cam Newton is in no way shape or form ready to be a QB in the NFL. I dont know if he made a quality throw all night with proper mechanics. No thanks!

You never draft for need, you draft BPA. Fairley is need, Green is BPA.

Also, it was mentioned earlier that Fairley would come in and instantly boost the defense. That probably wouldn't be the case, DTs usually take a while to transition. If you want a defensive player to come in and instantly contribute, that'd be Bowers or Peterson.

In his defense, stop comparing him to Suh. No DT is going to compare favorably to Suh for quite a while. Compare him to Sapp.

But if two players grade out the same in your evaluation, then isn't the tie-breaker need?

Also, WR's take a long time to transition as well - it's considered the 2nd hardest postion to transition after QB. Very few rookie WR's come in the league and tear it up year one, there have been many more impact rookie DT's then WR's.

Bowers is talented no doubt, but he scares me because he has the tendancy to totally dissapear. I also think DT is a much bigger need for us than DE right now, we've already got Charles Johnson and both Hardy and Brown have continued to show some promise. What Charles Johnson needs right now is an internal pass rush to collapse the pocket.

Agree it's not fair or reasonable to compare Fairley to Suh, but not every DT needs to be Suh to be successful.
