Assistant Coach Options

reason?

Wannstedt's style of coaching is very, very similar to Fox. All about motivating players and very little teaching or philosiphy in their appoarch.

I really doubt Wannstedt is a serious consideration because everything Rivera talked about in the press conference is the exact opposite to the style of coaching Wannstedt would bring to the table.

Also, reports are that the sourse for the information that Wannstedt is being considered for a interview by the Chargers and Panthers is Wannstedt's agent. Sounds like a play by the agent to get Wannstedt an interview by using the two teams involved with Rivera. Don't buy it.

rivera did mention learning under wannstedt tho.

I know but I really hope I'm right and he isn't really being considered because I think Wannstedt is a horrible choice.

To me, Rivera talked about about Buddy Ryan and Jim Johnson being the biggest influences in his coaching style and that would point to coaches out of those coaching trees. Rob Ryan has to be on the list in my opinion.

I honestly dont know what the fascination with Rob Ryan is. Has the guy ever really had a highly ranked defense?

also question per Wannstedt, I dont know much about him. What specifically is his defensive approach?

Rob Ryan hasn't had that many highly ranked defenses. However, he is looked at as a great teacher and someone who gets a lot out of lesser talent. The Browns defense in 2010 has been commented on as having played well above their talent level. No, it wasn't a top 10 defense but Ryan is being credited for them not being a bottom 10 defense when the talent level probably dicated them being there.

Still that doesn't mean I think he is the best option for the job, just that I think there is a better connection with Riveria based on philosiphy rather than Wannstedt, who's connection is based more so on work history.

As for Wannstedt defensive appoarch, I'm not entirely sure but I do know it is based in the 4-3 alignment with the front seven. His defenses in Dallas while he was with Jimmie Johnson were thought to be great defenses but really outside of Dallas I've never been that impressed which leads me to question if it was him or the players that lead to the success.

I like Ryan despite his mouth.

Wannstedt's defenses were good when they had good talent. JJ gave him lots of talent in both places.

The thing about Dave is we can wait that out - we don't have to have him. It appeals to me that he could be there as a DC or position coach/assistant head coach, to keep some of the defensive focus away from Rivera day to day, but he's not required. A good OC, that's required.

I like Ryan as a DC, and you can expect similar ideas with both being students of "The Buddy System".

My one question would be whether the personalities of the two would mesh. One is all business while the other is all bombast. And if Rivera wants to be as "hands on" with the defense as he's said, I'm not sure how that'd work with Ryan.

Sources told FOXSports.com that former CFL assistant coach and head coach Mike Kelly is on Rivera’s list of possible assistant coach hires. It’s believed that Kelly is being considered for a job as an assistant on the offensive side of the ball.

Just an assistant position.

Well, this is one the Panthers front office ought to just love

Poll names Blue Bombers' Kelly "CFL's Biggest Jerk"

Candid. Misunderstood. Over his head. Hilarious. Refreshing. An embarrassment. The single best thing to happen to football reporters since God invented the buffet and happy hour.

That’s just a sampling of the responses to one of the questions in the seventh annual Calgary Herald-Winnipeg Free Press CFL media poll.

The question put out to print and electronic media across the country?

Finish the following sentence: “Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly is …”

You get the idea.

No coach polarized reporters, fans and, yes, players more than Kelly after his, ahem, newsmaking rookie season as Bombers coach, in which he launched tirades at players and reporters in equal measure, and somehow pulled his team to within one win of a playoff spot after most had written the Bombers off by Labour Day.

However he continually bucked the trend of head coaches, offering only guarded statements to the media.

Asked, for instance, in the pre-season if there was one move he thought was paying off for the Bombers, he replied, “Yeah, hiring me.”

Then, there was his infamous comment about the shotgun offence, that it was for “flag football, and guys that haven’t coached quarterbacks very well.”

Keep in mind, both of these comments were intended to be humorous and not at all taken seriously, but it’s such a rarity to hear them coming out of the mouth of a head coach.
