Assistant Coach Options

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any info on him?

I like the idea of former players as coaches.

He was on my original list (in the OP) as a potential offensive line coach.

As a player, he was one of those guys that stuck around longer than you'd have expcted his ability to carry him because he was smart and helped mentor younger OL.

John Fox has completed his staff in Denver, hiring former Saints DB Coach Dennis Allen as DC and picking up yet another former Panther staffer in DB Coach Ron Milus.

Although Jim Skipper has said he has a standing offer to join Fox in Denver, there's now really no place for him to go. The only positions he'd ever coached (RB, DB) are covered and teams don't generally hire "assistant head coaches" who do nothing else.

Also of note: Bears assistant ST Coach Chris Tobor (who Jason LaCanfora had tied to us) is now the ST Coach for the Browns.

The names of QBs coach Paul Hackett, passing game coordinator Ted Tollner, OL coach Jim Michalczik, assistant OL line coach Chris Morgan, and LBs coach Mike Haluchak have been removed from the Raiders' website.

It's an obvious sign that all five former Tom Cable cronies will be purged from Hue Jackson's staff. With the departure of Michalczik and Morgan, the Raiders will continue to move away from Cable's zone-blocking scheme in favor of a power rushing attack. It won't have a major impact on Darren McFadden, as he broke out under Jackson's touch in 2010.

Scott Turner now onboard as offensive QC.

(ikely ends the chances of getting "the biggest jerk in the CFL")

Turner might hope to follow in the footsteps of Ken Zampese, a guy whose dad (Ernie) was a mentor to his dad (Norv) and who is now a decent coach in his own right.

In one of his prior jobs, Turner worked a lot with Matt Moore. His hiring could help Moore's chances of getting a shot to come to camp, but it's no lock.

Surprises continue. Jeff Fisher expected to part ways with the Titans

Would be a pretty big shock to see Fisher land here in any capacity, but if his assistants are allowed to walk, we could conceivably get Rivera's old LB Coach Dave McGinnis on board

Names from the Titans staff worth that are looking at if they become available. Which sadly they may not. The Titans have stated an intent to keep as many of Fisher's assistants as possible (still worth a look, though).

The names...

Fred Graves, WR Coach - coached Steve Smith at Utah

Dave McGinnis, LB Coach - was Ron Rivera's position coach when he played for the Bears

Tim Hauck, Asst. DB Coach - played for the Eagles for four of the years Rivera was a coach there

Steve Watterson, Strength and Conditioning - long time coach, the Titans have been fairly good in this area

As a side note, this is TE Coach John Zernhelt's listing on NFL.com. Pay attention to his job assignment from 1994 to 1995.

Tight Ends, born January 4, 1954, Pottsville, Pa. Offensive lineman Maryland 1974-77. No pro playing experience. College coach: Ferrum 1977-1980, Marshall 1981, East Carolina 1982-86, Maryland 1987-1991, Rice 1992-93, Duck 1994-95, South Carolina 1996-98, James Madison 1999-2002, The Citadel 2003-04. Pro coach: New York Jets 2005, joined Titans in 2006.

So I'm guessing that for those two years, either he was working for the University of Oregon, or there's a "Duck University" out there that I don't know about, or perhaps some wizard or witch literally turned him into a duck :sosp:

(I'll do some further research to find out which it was)
