Per Jay Glazer: Rivera to become Panthers HC

I think its strange that the FO is locked into hiring a DC. Capers had 1 good year, Seifert stunk, and most of you think John Fox was terrible (although i don't)

So why not even interview Gruden, Harbaugh, green etc. For the cost of a plane ticket and a room at the Ritz you could at least cross them off the list for sure.

Richardson once said that they like the demeanor and personality characteristics of defensive guys as head coaches versus offensive ones.

The general stereotype is that most defensive guys are aggressive, fired up motivators who like the defense operate on instinct, are decisive and quick to diagnose and react. They are team builders, emotional and player's coaches.

Offensive guys are stereotypically thought to be cerebral, calm, and operate systematically. Kind of the opposite of each other.

Obviously the reality can be very different. For example Harbaugh and Gruden are offensive guys they have the mentality of a defensive guy while a guy like Tony Dungy seemed too laid back to be a defensive coordinator. He did a good job though.

Has to do with the way defensive coaches have to plan for all possibilities and adapt and make changes on the fly. Most defensive guys are great communicators and hands on while you see the OC in the booth talking only to the QB separate from the team.

Other thoughts to add??

I am cautiously optimistic. The question isn't how highly his defense was ranked, but his ability to lead a team. Only time will tell, but I am hopeful.

Was there ever any word on why he was turned down for so many jobs?

I am as interested in seeing who the organization finds to coach the offense. I am excited about the organization's plan to pair a respected OC with a defensive minded HC. There's great potential in that, given the right men are found.

That's good analysis and the numbers are out there to show that good DCs can be great HCs.

At the same time there is no magic formula in the NFL. And if there is then everyone figures it out pretty quickly.

IF DCs really make the best HCs then it stands to reason that all the DCs that will make truly great coaches will be snapped up. which makes me wonder if locking yourself into a DC is just handcuffing the decision. And maybe we are getting a guy who isn't necessarily a great coach but is all that's left in the DC market.

He looks good on paper but none of us really know what kind of coach he is except for his defensive stats and the fact that he has been interviewing for 9 years.

And why does JR make a big horse and pony about needing offense but doesn't even interview an offensive coach?
