Williams has missed more games with injury than Stewart and the only games Stewart missed were with a concussion, which can't really be avoided. William is not that much if better at all than Stewart, they are different backs with different styles. Williams could not do what Stewart does between the tackles just like Stewart is not as good at cut backs as Williams.

This is the first season where Williams has been hurt for a long period of time. Ever since college Stewart has been bothered by his linguring injuries and it has kept him out of Training Camp. He has NEVER finished a full training camp (I'm not even sure if he ever practiced at all during training camp). We aren't comparing injuries of just this season, we are talking about their history! Stewart is a down hill runner - Runningbacks like that don't have long careers (never have). To get rid of D-Williams would be the biggest mistake Carolina would ever make. It won't happen ether. The Panthers aren't THAT stupid.

Double Trouble will be back and healthy next season to make some noise. You can bet on it!

I want to keep Deangelo but if we want to resign our own guys and get out in FA to get upgrades I could see him being tagged and traded for a 2nd and late round pick. I know we have lots of cap room but this money will go fast when we want to retain players and make upgrades.

So in the draft we landed:

First Round- AJ. Green

2nd Round- J. Moffit- He will be a great player. Could start at RG or at least be serviceable depth.

3rd Round- Sam Acho- Bolster's DE. Also the draft will occur before FA starts, so this is a good pick in case CJ tells us to f**k off.

3rd Round- Phil Taylor- This guy is big as hell would keep the blockers off our LB's

My late round selection is Graig Cooper out of Miami. He is coming off of injury, which is risky but this is a late round pick. He has great numbers and good return skills. He was considered a 1st round prospect. Should Deangelo be traded we can't have Goodson taking KR duties. This is a low risk solution with lots of upside. Plus we have AE if it's not working.

In FA I picked up Gabe Watson because again he has huge size and I think he would hungry on our team. He has fallen in Arizona and shouldn't be too pricey to have.

The biggest sign is probably Mebane. Great player that puts Landri into a rotational role to make him more effective.

I also signed Champ Bailey. I think he's a more realistic sign than Aso and wouldn't command as much money. I think he would make Gamble and Munnerlyn much better corners.

Picked up J. Bushrod to at least give us a decent option in the event that the line starts to fall apart. I also think Schwartz is a good RG when Otah is in the line up. I think it's more important to have a serviceable tackle that can keep the interior line intact.

Unless there is a good offer for Dan Conner I'm keeping him. If the LB's start to fall again we will need him. This is a great player.

If we can somehow keep D. Will. Maybe through the franchise tag, then I'll take a late round flyer on a QB.

As far QB goes. Let's face it, Jimmy has no where to go but up and it's not like we gave him or Matt Moore great situations to work with. Hasselbeck would be a great stop gap option. Marc Buldger would be a good mentor for these guys.

I like it for the most part, competitive at least.... and if we sucked we could have Luck to Green.

HEAD COACH: Ron Rivera

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: John Ramsdell

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Keith Butler

RE-SIGN:

Ryan Kalil

Charles Johnson

Derek Landri

Geoff Schwartz

TRADE/Cut:

DeAngelo Williams (franchise + trade) = 3rd rounder

Steve Smith = 3rd/4th rounder

2011 DRAFT:

1st: Nick Fairley DE Aubrun

3rd: Jarred Powe NT Mississippi

3rd (Williams): Mike Pouncy OG Florida

3rd (Peppers comp.): Jeremy Beal OLB Oklahoma

3rd/4th (Smitty): Chase Minnefield CB Virginia

4th Casey Matthews ILB Oregon (Yes he is Clay's younger brother)

5th Michael Egnew TE Missouri

6th Alex Henery PK Nebraska

7th Adam Grant OT Arizona

FREE AGENCY:

QB Marc Bulger, Ravens: Not looking for a starter here just a vetern pressence and mentor for Clausen and Pike.

WR Malcom Floyd, Chargers: This one will cost some money but isn't a bank breaker. Floyd showed he has the ability to be the #1 in the NFL but VJ will be the one with a contract in San Diego come next year. This will end up being one of only two splashes the Panthers make in the offseason.

OG Mike Brisiel, Texans: Mostly unknown, undrafted rookie a couple years back has been a huge pressence for the Texans and starter for the past two seasons. Lack of name recognition will lower the price for a player that really is comparable to Mankins and Nicks.

TE Bo Scaife, Titans: Not exactly the speedster that many would want but still a verticle threat and a good blocker in the run game. And unlike Owen Daniels, Scaife doesn't have a history of injuries and will come at a cheaper asking price.

NT Paul Soliai, Dolphins: A young, relatively unknown NT. Has great size and strength. Great signing for a NT without spending a ton in free agency or waiting for one to develop out of the draft.

Lamar Woodley, OLB, Steelers: This is where the money will be spent in free agency. Bulter will bring in his young and talented LB from the Steelers. Woodley isn't as flashy as Harrison but is more sound in his coverage and methodical with his pass rush.

53 MAN ROSTER/DEPTH CHART:

QB: Jimmy Clausen, Marc Bulger, Tony Pike

RB: Jonathan Stewart, Mike Goodson, Tyrell Sutton

FB: Tony Fiammetta

WR: Malcom Floyd, David Gettis, Brandon LaFell, Armanti Edwards, Charly Martin

TE: Dante Rosario, Gary Barnidge, Michael Egnew

LT: Jordan Gross, Adam Grant

LG: Travelle Wharton, Mike Pouncy

OC: Ryan Kalil, Chris Morris

RG: Mike Brisiel, Chris Morris as Backup

RT: Jeff Otah, Geoff Schwartz

NT: Paul Soliai, Jarred Powe

DT: Nick Fairley, Derek Landri

DE: Charles Johnson, Tyler Brayton

LOLB: LaMarr Woodley, Eric Norwood, Jeremey Beal

LILB: Dan Conner, Nic Harris, Jordan Senn

MLB: Jon Beason, Casey Matthews

WLB: Greg Hardy, Everette Brown

CB1: Chris Gamble, Captain Munnerlyn, RJ Stanford

CB2: Robert McClain, Chase Minnefield

FS: Sherrod Martin, Jordan Pugh

SS: Charles Godfrey, Marcus Hudson

K: John Kasay, Alex Henery

P: Jason Baker

KOS: Alex Henery

LS: J.J. Jansen

KR: Mike Goodson

PR: Charlie Martin

This of course is with the defense moving to a 3-4 alignment.

Unless the rules for comp picks changes (don't think that's even part of the CBA) then yes, we will definitely get a 3rd for Peppers. Probably the first comp pick. And YOU CAN'T TRADE A COMP PICK. I've seen people suggest we trade the comp pick numerous times. You can't do it.

Resign

DeAngelo Williams RB

Ryan Kalil C

James Anderson OLB

Thomas Davis OLB

Charles Johnson DE

Sign

Alan Faneca OG- My first choice would be Mankins or Dahl. But I think Mankins might be a bit out of our price range and Atlanta will retain Dahl. Faneca can be a cheap veteran stop-gap. Any other suggestions?

Richard Seymour DT- Still has the ability to get to the QB. This should be his last big contract. Even then I don't think he would break the bank. Veteran leader.

Brandon Mebane DT- Relentless DT. Exactly what we need to push the pocket.

Champ Bailey CB- Not the premiere shutdown corner he once was. But is still great. Would make a solid duo with Gamble trying to stop the NFC South's passing attack. Doubt he would get a large contract at his age.

Alex Smith QB- Was going to add a vet QB here. But Smith has been decent, he is young and if we do get a good OC/QB Coach like they are stating they might be able to fix him. He never really had much outside of Gore and Davis. Also had to learn a new offense every year. Might be worth a shot. Would also like Shaun Hill or consider resigning Moore.

Draft

1st- AJ Green WR- Puts Smitty in the slot and becomes our #1 of the future.

3rd- Marvin Austin DT- Would like another DT for this pick. But Austin is full of potential and I believe Ron Rivera can put him in a spot to flourish.

3rd- Lance Kendricks TE- If we switch to an offense that shares any resemblance to the Chargers, we're going to need an athletic TE. Enter Kendricks. Complete TE to stretch the field.

4th- John Moffitt OG- Versatile OL prospect that plays with a nasty demeanor. Provides depth and hopefully can take over the starting RG spot.

5th- Greg Romeus DE- Kinda like Hardy last year. I believe he can slip this far due to injuries. The kid oozes potential and hopefully Rivera can untap it.

6th- Rashad Carmichael CB- Another CB that gives us more depth. Will be an incredible dime CB making it difficult for teams to pass the ball at will on us.

In conclusion, I focused on building the trenches on both sides of the ball. Also added a few CBs to make it hard for the Saints and Patriots of the NFL to easily pick apart the secondary. Green & Kendricks can be playmakers. Our version of VJax & Gates.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
