Kolb Wants Out Of Philly?

It seems as though most Huddlers' perceived value of the number 1 pick is grossly inflated. #1 pick are rarely HOFers, they are also rarely even perennial Pro Bowlers. Many may go on to be career starters, however, most end up being solid role players. Without even mentioning the dreaded busts. Look at the most recent #1 picks. (excluding the last two as it is said it takes 3yrs to develop most players)

2008 - Jake Long - 3 pro bowls*

2007 - Jawalrus - out of the league '09****

2006 - Mario Williams - 2 pro bowls**

2005 - Alex Smith - free agent**

2004 - Eli Manning - 1 pro bowl, Super Bowl MVP**

2003 - Carson Palmer - 2 pro bowls**

2002 - David Carr - enough said***

2001 - Michael Vick - 4 pro bowls*

2000 - Courtney Brown - out of league '06***

1999 - Tim Couch - out of league '07***

12 pro bowl selections in a combined 55 seasons

2 Perennial Pro Bowlers*

3 Starters**

4 Journeymen***

1 Major bust****

My point? It's about a 50/50 shot if the guy we take #1 will even end up a starter for us. So why would you not even consider using it to trade for a guy who has proven he can be a starter. And IMO, with the right coaching, could end up being multiple Pro Bowler. Our 1st + 3rd for Kolb + Philly's 2nd is a more than fair deal from our end.

I'm all for setting our sights high, but please be realistic.

For the record, I don't think we should go after him, or that Philly even would trade him. Just that everyone seems to think that nothing could be worth trading our pick and that whoever goes #1 this year will be a first ballot hall of famer. When in reality we will be lucky if they go to a pro bowl once.

Ok,

Kolb has started 7 out of 64 games in his career.

He has 11 TDs 14 ints career.

He's thrown for 2,082 yds career.

He's proven he can be a starter & be wildly mediocre.

Hence I say take the shot at picking up greatness in the draft.

Kolb will be a good QB wherever he goes. He's had great coaching. Reid has shaped Vick up since getting into Philly and I have no doubt Kolb is ready to be a starter. I'd like to see him given a full season like a QB should deserve.

Now that Luck is not an option, I don't see any other first rounder that's a sure pick. Two #1's for Kolb, is out of the question though. Maybe we could trade our #1 for a lower first round pick and an extra 2 and 3, and THEN Trade our 1st for Kolb, etc.

Kolb has at least proven he can, at times, look really great. It's almost less than a gamble than drafting a college QB honestly. And face it, us trading down since Luck is staying in school is NOT out of the question.

Most people on here, like a poster above said, will think a #1 pick is guaranteed success, but I think Kolb would be worth a gamble. Like I said though, not for 2 first round picks though.

You'll continue to hear numerous reasons as to why people don't want our team to take gambles, or spend money on certain people, but sometimes you have to do a little bit of all of that to start a successful run with a team.

there is no way they get more than a 2nd rounder for him

they don't really have a reason to trade him if they wanted him around as a backup to be honest. he is only owed like $1 million IF that next season and then he's gone.

Yes, his salary is just over 1 million. He wants to start before entering his second contract, so he will not sit back quietly.

The bidding for Kolb is going to be intense. I think we could make an offer they would consider, however.

1. DW or Goodson RB

2. Connor LB

3. Swap first round selections

We get the QB we need, send Penn St. LB home to start, and still keep a first rounder that might be good enough to land Stephen Paea or a good CB. In the 4th round we could draft Irvin (NCSU) or Sturdivant (UNC) to back up Beason.

That is good value for Philly, and I would make the trade if I were Hurney. Kolb is the real deal. He is seasoned with a good coach and 4 years of development. He has always been behind good QBs. He will succeed here.
