Rivera's second interview

Lumps

Recommended Posts

Right, I think it's just one small factor to weigh in with a huge amount of other factors. Too many times guys get won over with a great interview, ignore a ton of red flags and hire a guy that's really not cut out for the job. Anyway this is probably way off topic so I'll just STFU already.

Agreed. the NFL is different than the business world where the interview is 90% of the job. Stats, reputation and philosophy are 90% in the NFL.

Philosophy in that most teams have a target sector already in mind (DC, delegating coach, offensive coach, QB developer, hardass

Reputation in that the NFL is an extremely small world

Stats. No shortage of those.

I'm going through the Observer archives for the timeline in the Fox hiring. He got his second interview on January 24th 2002 and was the only candidate to get a second interview, even though the Panthers would have given Steve Spurrier a second interview if he hadn't signed with the Redskins first. Fox was then hired on January 25th. So if they go that route again, Rivera could be announced as the new head coach within a couple of days after all and Rivera is definitely the frontrunner.

Just keep in mind the date of that hire. January 24th. The season ended January 6th that year, so the search took about 3 weeks. We're not even a full week into the search for the new head coach in 2011 yet.

I don't know if this is a real possibility, but I'll be extremely happy to see Orton brought in and Green drafted...

Orton would have been perfect over the last couple season's here, but I don't know what kind of O we'll run under the new regime. Orton isn't flashy, but he's efficient and does a pretty good job taking care of the ball. If we stick with a similar O philosophy I'd love to have him here.

yeah, that's all I would be looking for at the moment.. If we bring him in and draft Green, let's say our offense gets going under a smart OC (we have the tools for Orton to flourish with a run game and talented targets), we might not get another high pick but our scouting department should still be able to find a solid QB for the future.. and that should be the goal of our FO.

I'm watching Aaron Rodgers right now beat up on the Eagles and it's nothing flashy.. solid QB play, short passing, and solid running.. the Packer defense is really talented and they are most likely going to win this game against what was thought to be a potent offense by the Eagles.. (although Vick and company has went downhill from the start of the season... game film can kill a flashy, potential MVP)

I think Orton gives us 2-3 years to target a solid franchise QB that we could make a move on.

of course, if that scouting department feels that QB is in this draft, I won't be mad if we go for it.. It's not out the question that a good QB coach turns Clausen into that guy, while Orton gives him a couple years to grow..

Rivera would be fine by me....an ex-player with Championship experience, a long, impressive resume and widely regarded as a player's coach. I gotta say it's refreshing to hear a lot of positive words about this prospect. Get a top shelf OC along for the ride and we should have a quick turnaround.
