C47's Post Luck Mock Draft....

C47

Here we go....

First Free Agency:

QB:

Trent Edwards: Provides a young QB who has shown some success on terrible teams in the NFL. The new staff could bring Edwards in to compete with Clausen and hopefully one could turn into a legitimate NFL caliber QB.

RB:

Deangelo Williams: Resign Deangelo to a long term deal. Goodson has been electric this season but his ball security is an issue. Between Goodson and Williams I would keep Deangelo 100% of the time. Keep Double Trouble together and let them run wild next year.

WR:

Jacoby Jones: A speedy slot guy that can make big plays on the perimeter and help out in the return game.

TE:

Jeremy Shockey: A very well rounded TE. He is a dangerous target in the passing game and is an above average blocker. He fits Rivera's desire of a do everything TE. Also Shockey's attitude is something that we could definitely use on offense.

OL:

Ryan Kalil: The OL is one of the strengths on this team despite some fans beliefs. Keep Kalil here long term and have 4/5 of an elite OL.

DL:

Charles Johnson: Has been dominant at DE this year. He will only get better as he gets more help.

Barry Coefield: Only if he's cheap. Would be an instant upgrade to our current DT depth chart and would make for a nice four man rotation with our three.

LB:

James Anderson: He earned a new deal with his play this year. Lock him up long term as Beason, Davis and Anderson will make a scary LB corps for years to come.

Thomas Davis: He already said he wanted to retire in Carolina. While two ACL injuries in less then a year is scary if you can sign him to an incentive laden deal it would be well worth it.

CB:

None

S:

None

K/P:

None

Trades: Trade Mike Goodson to Greenbay for a 4th round pick.

PatrickPeterson2.jpg

First Round: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: This pick really could change depending on what hour of the day you ask me. When Andrew Luck decided to stay at Stanford for another season the Panthers draft went up in flames. While DT is a much bigger need then CB PP7 has just separated himself from the rest of the pack as the best prospect. Don't give me the "you don't draft a corner with the number one pick BS", Peterson is the best prospect in the draft period....you take the number one guy at number one overall....

jurrell-casey.jpg?w=620

Third Round: Jurrell Casey, DT, USC: The Panthers need a DT, they've needed one since Kris Jenkins left for NY. Jurrell Casey is an absolute monster at DT. At 305 pounds Casey still has plenty of burst in his first step to get into the backfield in a hurry. Casey is a guy who will command double teams and free our DEs for one on one matchups off the edge. Casey also has a mean streak, when he gets in the backfield he wants to punish the QB, I like that in a DT.

McClainUSE.jpg

Third Round Compensatory for Julius Peppers: Terrell McClain, DT, USF: McClain is an underrated DT prospect who has the ability to get after the passer. Solidifying the DT position will go a long way to keeping our defense off the field. We do just that with back to back DT picks in the third.

kristofer-odowd-2008-ncaa-football-oregon-ducks-at-southern-california-trojans-10-44-october-4-2008-fFhFFV.jpg

Fourth Round: Kristofer O'Dowd, C, USC: Yes I know he plays center, but O'Dowd is about as versatile as linemen come. He's an extremely athletic center who loves to get down field and block. He would make an easy transition to guard in my opinion. He's also a hard worker and has been an anchor on USC's line since his first game as a true freshman. While he needs to bulk up a bit I think he would be an excellent value pick in the fourth to plug into our line. He would be able to lock down the guard position in a season or two.

Fresno+State+v+Boise+State+kUBipWBZNHkl.jpg

Fourth Round (From GB): Jeron Johnson, SS, Boise State: An exceptional tackler in the secondary, Johnson could provide needed depth to the saftey position and perhaps overtake the position from Godfrey alltogether. With Ron Rivera's focus on sound fundamental tackling Godfrey will certainly have to improve. If he can't Johnson can slide in a make plays in the secondary.

610x.jpg

Fifth Round: Alex Henery, K, Nebraska: Henery is the nations most accurate kicker. He only missed one FG all year (a 51 yard try that was blocked. He has a big leg and could handle both FG tries and kickoff duties. He also could punt if Jason Baker got injured as Henery was All Big 12 for both kicking and punting.

s

Sixth Round: Tydreke Powell, DT, UNC: Tydreke Powell is an athletic fierce DT that could prove to be a nasty rotational player in the interior. If McClain or Casey go down Powell is a guy who can step in and make plays. He also has the ability to slide to the end position on goal line plays to provide extra muscle.

s

Seventh Round: D.J. Young, OT, Michigan State: D.J. Young is a big tackle with a mean streak who would fit into our offensive line and could fill in at guard positions if injuries came up. While he won't be replacing Jordan Gross he certainly would provided important depth at the position.

Undrafted Free Agents

RB: Brandon Saine, Ohio State: KR/PR

WR: Scotty McKnight, Colorado: Depth

TE: Jordan Cameron, USC: Depth/project

OT: Darius Morris, Temple: Depth

OG: Butch Lewis, USC: Depth

OLB: Spencer Paysinger, Oregon: Depth/ST

DT: David Carter, UCLA: Depth

ILB: Derrell Smith, Syracuse: Depth

Ok, I meant to ask you about Stocker. I know Rivera has commented that he wants a "do-it-all" type of tight end. I've watched him play a few times and haven't been overly impressed. Like you said, he struggles with the running game a bit. A lot of this bigger games came against weaker competition. Just interested to know why you think he'd be a good pick up? Is it more of a value pick that late?

He's got physical tools with plenty of room to bulk up. And naturally you can not blame him for his production decrease in his senior year either.

Actually I need to ammend the draft. After Rivera's presser and his comments on the TE I don't think Stocker fits at all. I'm going to add FA in the next one I do because I believe that's where next years starter at TE comes from. May also put in some undrafted FA as well. As soon as I get the chance I'll get around to changing it....

Dowling won't last into the 3rd, but otherwise looks good.

His draft stock took a huge drop this year. He was a late first early second rounder if he came out last year. Could he improve his stock with a great combine, of course. As of right now though most of the mocks and many draft websites have him listed anywhere from a late second to third rounder.....

Here we go....

First Free Agency:

CB:

Eric Wright: We wont get into a bidding war for Aso, and we shouldn't. Eric Wright would provide us with a very underrated corner that we could put oppositte Chris Gamble and keep Munnerlyn at the nickel position where he has proven to be more then solid.

We get Eric "EazymuthafvckinE" Wright...? Hell Yeah!

Great plan...I would love to see something like this happen.

    • i think i go in the opposite direction of most. my ideal retirement is living in some old downtown area in a flat above some shop or something.  life out in the country was just something i got real tired of. My kids actually miss some of living out there, which i understand. that was where they grew up for the most part. 40 acres with a 2.5 acre pond. it was beautiful, but also way too much (and too expensive) for me to keep up with.
    • FLASHBACK: I remember back when ESPN was just starting--he was their anchor.  They used to show stuff like Rodeo and field hockey--I remember laughing when he went to a commercial mocking a cycling competition in Utah (or something similar--I made that up) and I laughed.  I told my dad, "We may have us a new anchor when we get back from commercial."  When they came back from commercial, Berman was looking very serious and he said, "Any comments by me do not reflect the views of ESPN....The men and women who cycle are dedicated athletes and we are honored to shine light on their sport." (Paraphrasing).  Dad laughed hysterically. My first memory of him--and that was like 1980.
    • Might not have a team without them. Although that probably applies to the Panthers, too.
