Who should we draft with the #1 pick?

Like I said in the other thread, if anyone is interested in Patrick Peterson, LSU is playing on FOX right now.

I've seen enough of him this year. Against big time receivers like Julio Jones he didn't do the greatest shutting them down. He's a fine a CB but I'm not sure he's the best cover corner in the draft. He's been hyped as the top CB because of the return ability and his campaign for Heisman.

AJ Green.

6'4" 212 lbs. 40 time: 4.38-4.58.

You've gotta take the guy if you stay at 1.

I've been saying it all day, and I'll say it again.

We had the worst offense in the league last year, and there are quality Free Agents available for defense. None of it will matter though if you don't pour some serious focus on the offense. The guy is to Receiving what Luck is to QBing. He's a rare, blue-chip prospect, and is the last remaining "can't-miss" player left in this class. We have got to work on our offense. By drafting Green, you automatically make the aging but still extremely talented Smith expendable as trade ammunition for another QB. If you end up keeping Smith, then you have one heck of a Receiving corp that would force a 2 year pro in Clausen to at least play adequately. We have a chance for a good team here THIS SEASON. Don't reach for a player who can't contribute, or worse, is a bust altogether.

Take AJ.

have to agree. got to take the best player and that's either Bowers, Fairley or AJ Green. Cam Newton isnt even top 5 on Kiper or McShay's draft boards and not many others think Newton is top 5. You dont just draft a QB because you need a QB, that's drafting on just need, you draft on both need and best player and AJ Green is a need and best offensive player in my book. Gettis and LaFell in my book are good 3rd recievers and yes they can make a play, but AJ Green is that good. i cant see Cam Newton winning any more than 5 games if he's drafted to start on day one. he's not going to out run guys like Vick or run over guys in the NFL which means he better not run more than 12 times like he usually does in college. he will have to throw and only run when he has to.

if the scouting department doesn't feel any QB is going to be a true franchise QB...

Draft AJ Green and bring in Orton.. find a way to get a franchise QB next year..

you dont want Kyle Orton, in my book, he's very average. he played well in Denver under McDaniels passing system which was quarterback friendly, but i wouldnt want to trade for him.

Steve Smith is in an interesting situation. He has 1-2 years left. Speed WRs drop rather dramatically when they lose a step. Does he ask for a trade now that Luck stuck us? He may not have his answers by draft day--probably won't. Although Gettis and Lafell are developing nicely, neither is ready to assume the #1 Wr role. Smith is not either, technically, but in a pinch, we go with him there. He would be so much better in the slot. In his mind, he would be so much better on another team. But JR is like his grandfather, and that makes this tough for him. However, in the end, you have to ask for a trade because you are not a part of the youth movement.

AJ and Julio are the only 2 WRs in the draft who can step into the #1 WR spot as rookies. I say Smith will want out, but why let our success rest on his indecisiveness? Draft AJ. If Smith stays, use him to tutor AE and play in the slot. Gettis and Lafell can play the #2 and rotate in at #1 to give AJ rest. We just got very good at WR.

We are going to a more open, offensive attack and we will not be running as much, according to JR. We will need more that what we have. AJ is the pick. My question is this: Will SS be a cancer or a mentor?

As long as he doesn't throw any more punches he can stay with us, but in a seriousness, if he does stick around and we draft Green or Jones then we will be ok. I still don't see Armanti back in carolina.

Bowers might be the reason a team trades up with us, but to me it is between Green and Peterson. We just don't need a DE. I would go with Green because we are going to be more aggressive on offense and will need 4 good WRs. If Smith asks to be traded, we would still need 1. He is everything you look for in a WR. Contrary to popular opinion, he is a high-character kid, according to a friend who knew him in high school.

Why not Fairley? Well, DT is deep in this draft but not exceptional at the top like last year. We can get a solid DT in the 3rd.

So you're saying Steve Smith will be a number three receiver here with AJ at #1 and Gettis/Lafell at #2? I don't know if you've noticed or not, but Smith has not lost a step at all. Over the past two years, he's had terrible QBs throwing to him, and Clausen being a high school QB at that. I'm sorry, but even Andre Johnson would look like he's 40 playing with Clausen. As soon as we can get a good QB here in Carolina, Smitty will explode again.

Who are you hoping for? At this point, I am hoping for average. I hoped JR intends to bring in a vet for a year or two while developing talent. I am not sure Clausen and Pike are the talent he needs to begin the process. I would take Kolb, but Andy isn't doing that, not as much as Vick limps around.

What about Hasselbeck for a year? He was always average, even though he got hot and went to a PB.

I'd take Hasselback over Orton, I just never liked Orton.
