When the Boston Celtics got Larry Bird, they drafted him his Junior year. However, he went back to college for his senior year, which was an amazing year for him. The Boston Celtics retained his rights for during his senior season, and then he came out the next season and became a legendary NBA player.

Let me state this. This is not possible with the NFL, but its just interesting. They discussed this on Mike and Mike.

Would you draft Andrew Luck this year, knowing that you will have burnt your #1 pick for a whole season, but you will get him guaranteed the following year?

You would have his rights, to have or trade, but he is a risk because of injury.

Would you take him this season anyways?

I would.

If you could do that in the NFL I'm sure our FO would in a heartbeat....

I wouldn't... too much risk in a potential injury...

Another thought I had... What if Luck declares for the supplemental draft? lol... We could potentially have a #1 overall, and another #1 overall at the cost of our 1st rounder next year...

That would defiantly be a win win. Could happen too.
