Trade down please.....

People have been killing me with this, "There's no reason for teams to trade up!" talk. Especially with the rookie pay scale coming in, draft picks now have a legitimate dollar value associated with it as opposed to Jimmy Johnson's old formula.

Now owners while taking risks on draft picks, aren't risking 50+ million dollars on them. It creates more incentive to trade around.

I'm would not mind at all mid 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks. More bullets!

if you can pull it off great. i just don't see it happening.

any trade out of first overal that doesn't include a 2012 1st rounder isn't all that appealing to me.

i'm not really all that concerned with keeping that #1 though. not really anyone worth it.

Agreed. That's why ideally if you trade the pick, it's to someone that thinks they are only a player or two away, and will be better than they really are...kind of like we were the last two years.

i can't really see anyone screaming to hold on to the #1 overall pick. it isn't as big of a deal as it was before luck decided to be a nerd. really isn't much debate on whether we should trade down anymore. the only debate is whether or not someone would want to move up to that spot.

And that depends entirely on someone separating themselves during the pre-draft process.

Okay, I need to know this...why do you all think a team will trade up with us?

Assume for a second that we weren't the Panthers. What would you think of our FO if we traded our late-round first (Giants for example), possibly a second and a third, or...our 2012 first for a guy who you could maybe actually get by trading with a team from picks 3-10? What would you feel if that FO traded a good amount of picks for a guy that isn't even seen as a clear cut #1? I'd imagine you'd be pissed?

It's almost as if you think the Panthers brass is smarter than the other teams, and you think we'd be pulling a fast one on them but giving them this less-than-usual stellar #1 pick in exchange for a whole bunch of later picks. I mean, we'd never trade up like that for a guy like Green, Fairley, or Bowers. Why do you all think another team will? Picks are more valuable than cash, and you think someone will give us picks for one of those guys???

Interesting.

I can't speak for others, but myself, I don't think anyone would trade up today. However, during the pre-draft process someone usually steps up to become the new draft darling. Usually that person is someone with uncanny measurables that make GM's drool, but for whatever reason had some question marks heading into the process. It's under that scenerio that I think a trade down is possible.

Especially when you consider the fact there will almost certainly be a rookie pay scale, so the financial investment won't be as prohibative as in years past.

Richardson came out and said they aren't going to trade down from the 1st pick. He wouldn't come out and say this being all in on Andrew Luck. They obviously have a board and a list of players that they feel are all possibilities at the 1st spot.

What JR basically said in my mind was "If you have the number 1 spot and the chance to draft an elite blue chip player, you don't trade down"

What do you guys think?

I still firmly believe it won't happen, but it is funny to think that the ESPN hype machine we all hate may be the ones that make someone a new clear cut #1.

He was just saying that we will pick Luck if he's available. That's why he used the phrase "at this point." Now that Luck is staying, all bets are off.

With that said, I'm sure he does want value with our first pick (wherever it may be), and a quality player that can have an impact as a rookie.

The thing is, that's all we fans have to go on. Unfortunately, we also tend to immediately rate picks and entire drafts based on the hype and media projections, when actual teams may have a completely different take on a given player (i.e. Alualu last year).

Dont agree at all. For one if we trade into the mid round we can kiss a QB this year goodbye. Buf, Cinci, AZ, SF, and Tenn. Are all eying a QB this year. Secondly when we fail this year without a QB we will have lost our 1st pick next year and maybe Luck once again. 3rdly this draft class is full of players we dont need. Yea DT would be nice but Denver or Wash will take DT more then likely. So if we have no QB or DT then what?? Another WR?

Any assumption we make about the value of a first round draft pick depends on whether or not the CBA is in place at the time of the draft.

Scenario 1 - No CBA by April 23rd= Cannot draft with the assumption that the draft pick will be NFL ready this year. Do not know when the rookie cap will apply.

Scenario 2 - CBA by April 23rd = Rookie cap applies and draftees can train at facility.

Since scenario 1 is more likely, we cannot make a reasonable guess about draft picks or trades at this time.

Luck still has a few days to change his mind. With Luck out, Cam Newton would still not be the best player available in the 2011 draft.
