Trade down please.....

any team that wants to trade up to #1 is likely not going to have the ammo this year alone... Someone like SF, Minnesota, Arizona, Tennessee, Washington, Miami, Jacksonville, and possibly Seattle would all have to give up future considerations to move up to that spot... We could easily take their first this and next year to do so PLUS another pick this year, and I would be okay with it...

Those teams are likely to be leading the race for QBs, and if Newton doesn't declare, you're looking at a race for Gabbert, Mallet, and Locker...

Even if Newton does declare, that is 4 QBs that could go before 4 teams that could be in the running for a young one come up on the clock...

That is just the QB position also, and doesn't take into consideration players like Fairley and Green...

You are all living in a post-Luck fantasy world. Zod "wants" you to know that there has never ever been a Draft where a team hasn't had a mad desire to trade up to get the #1 pick. While that can be debated, the fact is, there has always been a player there that a team wanted bad enough and gave up a lot to get him, or a player there that the team picking first knew they wanted.

That is not the case for 32 teams this year. We have the first pick and it's all over the board on who to pick. There is no clear set #1 here, from the "experts", from local media, or obviously from other teams' fans. I know we're all bummed about Luck, and trading down is the one thing that would make it a bit better, but it ain't happening. Sure, you can save some this year with the cap there, but no player is worth Zod's idea of a 2nd/3rd this year, or others' idea of a 1st in 2012.

Face it, we're making the pick. And thanks to AE, without that 2nd, if we want a QB, we better use it with the pick because Mallet, Gabbert, Locker, and Newton won't make it to the third round.

I say DT and then trade with Denver for Orton. Take this for a grain of salt, but a writer said that Denver's asking price of a 2nd Rounder is not what they'll get come crunch time. Trade them the 2012 third rounder?

God, I hope not. A third round pick for an aging QB, that's only a stop-gap answer? No thank you, but I'll look else where.

If you want to get a vet QB in free agency, there's going to VY. He's Cam Newton without all of the unknowns. At least with VY, you know what you're getting into.

Teams try all the time to trade down from the #1 spot and are usually unsuccessful. Unless there's a top franchise QB prospect on the board teams don't want to pony up the huge amount of draft picks needed to move up, and I don't really blame them. Would you really want to spend a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for a WR, CB or DT? I wouldn't.

That's what history has shown anyway, who knows what will happen. If you can get a good deal then sure, take it. I'm just not sure that deal will ever come across your table and even JR has said they won't trade the pick anyway.

It is difficult to make a reasonable assumption about much of anything yet, except that the lockout is going to happen.

Be it trading down the first overall draft pick, the implementation of the rookie salary cap, the head coach signing, or when the lockout will end. Those things are all unknowns.

Almost every meaningful decision our franchise can make any time soon depends on the ultimate game of chicken. The ante for both sides is in billions with a B. Which side do you think will flinch first?

I say the owners will prevail this time, because these changes are consistent with fan demands. They will make the sport better. Put simply, a victory for the owners is a victory for consumer advocacy. A precedent against this round of hypothetical antitrust lawsuit threats would be set the first time a supreme court had to decide what was good for the sport itself.

Trade downs always come down to the final minute anyway. Teams always take the full time, even if they don't expect a call.

If nothing at all changes with the CBA, and no one tries to trade up, then 1st pick = best player available. I doubt that would be a Quarterback, unless Luck changes his mind over the next 8 days.

The more I think about it, the more I believe the Panthers will go after Cam Newton (assuming he comes out). Think about it...this kid has an upside that's off the charts and he will put butts in the seats and get the attention of ESPN and the NFL Network like no other player they could draft.

I just don't think they can get a good enough deal to trade down, even with a rookie cap in place. I would never say never though. Hell, maybe they can trade down and get Newton.

Agreed.

You know how we desperately need competent quarterback play? Well, the Texans probably need secondary help more than we need a quarterback. I could really see them trading their pick to us to jump the Broncos for Patrick Peterson. I think Houston is picking #11, so it's still a very valuable pick.

i am thinking the Rams

They have their QB for the future and are starving to get back to the playoffs. They have two of the three things needed for success offensively. QB, stud RB, but only pedestrian no names at WR. AJ Green will be off the board somewhere before #5.

i can see the Rams moving up to get him. We can get their first for next season for that move, and possibly a mid rounder this year, but it won't work like in years past. no boatload of picks
