Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

He actually started in 2009 for Brinn College and that fall he led them to the 2009 NJCAA National Football Championship.

I'll give you one reason why. He played a college that you don't even know the name of.

Cam Newton is no thug. Everyone loves him on campus and he's been absolutely clean at Auburn. The stolen laptop thing was just a dumb decision on his part where he thought he was getting a deal on a laptop and didn't know it was stolen. The only "thug" thing he's done that I know of was tossing the laptop out the window when the police were coming to search his dorm room for it. But I call that a dumb decision based off panic.

Clean at Auburn? Really? What about that whole pay-to-play controversy that surrounded both him and his father for about a month? As a matter of fact, it was so controversial, that Auburn had suspended him for a game, before the NCAA ruled that Newton was not to be suspended.

I have been one of those people that have defended Newton but I honestly don't see him being a #1 overall pick. First round talent, yes, first pick no. I love the kid and I think he could be a good NFL QB but the only way I could see us getting the kid is if we trade down. He is the leader in QB rating this season which makes me think he is a better passer than what people give him credit for, on top of that its in the SEC. He is huge and would be hard for defenders to take down. He doesn't have speed like Vick but I could see him making the big plays like Vick does with his legs, the only difference is that he can run over defenders with his 6-6 250 body. Another knock on him is that he will get injured in the NFL with his style of play but he never had problems in the SEC which is no doubt one of the best conferences in college football and has been for years. I would like to see what he can do in the NFL but not on my team. With the luck the Panthers have had in the past, we will probably pass on him and he will end up being the best qb in the draft.

All these are soft as hell reasons to me.

As far as him being able to transition to a NFL offense... that's anyone's GUESS. There's nothing saying any QB can transition.

What he does bring is some awesome talent like we've never seen before.

the character issues should be a huge red flag to anyone that could potentially draft him. case in point, Mike Vick, Mike Williams, Jimmy Clausen etc.

that's not a soft reason at all. whoever you draft, you better make sure his ass won't set your franchise back for drafting him because of his character flaws.

also starting a season in a D2 school and winning it all is impressive (kind of) but isn't very #1 overall pick worthy. Armanti did the same poo.

I mean i'm not throwing the idea of drafting him out, i just provided you with reasons why not to take him #1 overall like you asked. pending he declares and he rapes the combines and poo, I'm all for it if he can help us win.

true on both points, honestly, winning at Binn isnt a shock, if Newton is a great college QB he should win there. As for the pay for play scheme, that's not being quite clean, i know it's allegations, but that's something you HAVE to look at.

Not to mention other QBs who have won the Heisman and have rings.

Yeah, all 2 of them

Roger Staubach won the Heisman in 1963 and won Super Bowls VI and XII.

Jim Plunkett won the Heisman in 1970 and won Super Bowls XV and XVIII.

Breaking an NCAA rule has nothing to do with breaking the law. The NCAA cleared him anyway.

So yes he's clean. I consider someone dirty when they break an actual law, if they're charged with a felony or misdemeanor. Not if they might have known about a rule being broken regarding some non-governmental body.

Alright, go ahead and draft Mallet or Locker while Newton is leading a team to the Playoffs. Mallet also has "character issues" Public intoxication fyi.

unless Newton goes to a good team, i dont see him leading a team to the playoffs in his rookie year, what if he's a Redskin???? As for Mallett, not worth the pick either, I like Locker, but he wont be picked that high, Gabbert now could be picked.
