Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

sam bradford is not #1 material because he plays in a screen type offense while most teams in the nfl play a pro style offense

you can do that with any QB coming out of college and you would be as accurate with that assessment as you would in saying that clausen is a natural for the panthers because he already plays in the same kind of offense.

He started on the left hash, rolled right, stepped up a little, then hit his TE.

The play looks different but the concept is the same. Get everyone going one way and throw back the other way. I can find more videos if you like?

Also, I just noticed too that in the Seattle play, they were on the RIGHT side hash marks. This puts your receiver options in the red-zone very limited on the right side.

The Auburn play was lined up ALL the way on the left side Hashes (which are wider in college you know).

Did they design the play to have the TE sneak up for an additional read?

Yeah... sure... I'm not arguing that.

But with all that room on the right side, you can't tell me that they designed the TE to be the first read on the left AGAINST the grain.

My point, again, is this... you can't say with 100% factual certainty he made one read on that play. He was looking forward almost the entire time.

No, the only FACT is that he faked a handoff, looked right, center, left, and threw against the grain. You say it isn't a read, but that's your opinion. That's not fact.

It's also a fact, that you don't know the play as it was called, and are assuming, by the results, that it was designed that way, and that Cam didn't make the play.

No, I get your point. He has questionable mechanics since he was a little sluggish on one snap.

Not really much to discuss after that.

Didn't the TE start out right, then center, then left? He could have very easily been following the TE with his eyes the entire time opposed to making reads. Or the other way around. Kind of pointless to argue when we don't know the play call.

The reason why Cam isn't #1 on anyone's draft list is because sports writers often wrapped up in memes of the moment and if it isn't the "trend" to be hot on a player, they aren't, even if they are wrong.

Wasn't Jimmy Clausen projected to go in the 1st round? Didn't he drop to the 2nd? And has he played like he was worthy of going in the 1st round?

actually that's false, Guys like Kiper and McShay dissed on The Golden Calf of Bristol and said he was a 3rd round pick at best, only Kiper like Clausen, McShay said he wouldnt take him in the first round, so there.

You've not watched Auburn play this year, because this is false. He is a dual threat QB. The stats show it. The highlights show it. Here's one on a TD play.

Then Clausen will be good, the college stats show it. The Golden Calf of Bristol will be great, the college stats show it, you can't go based on JUST stats when it comes to judging a future draft pick, you got to look at how he will translate to the pros, look at his footwork, mechanics and of course reading defenses, intelligence and leadership. As for that one TD play, i only saw one pass i liked (the one the reciever caught out of bounds), the other play (in the pros) will likely be read by a safety, the runs he did wont work, cant just run over people like he did at least 2 times.

He's under pressure, and the pocket is collapsing. Watch the read. He looks to his right. scans the center of the field, checks down to the left for the TD.

i wasnt a fan of that play, that usually doesnt work in the pros and likely a safety would've read his eyes and picked that off or he would've been sacked or run for 2 or 3 yards.

FF to 2:16. A receiver broke coverage towards the sideline, to catch a ball thrown to the outside of the sideline marker.

i will give you that throw, that was one i liked, but i did NOT like all the runs he did. he ran twice in there and in the pros, i see him not getting as much yards as he got.

If we don't take him #1 overall, we gamble on someone else doing so (Tennessee is interested in him at #8 overall).

Tennessee is the better team for him in my mind anyway, they know how to deal with this type of quarterback. Remember, we dont have a coach and Richardson passed on Vick (twice). i dont see us getting Newton and honestly, i dont really want him UNLESS McNabb starts for us next year so the transition will be smooth for him.

Just because he's the next best QB available in the draft does not be default mean that he should be the #1 overall pick

Agreed, that's all this is really. People are desperate to get rid of Clausen that they are willing to gamble on a guy who may not be ready to start in the pros.

If JR would spend money we could get McDaniels as OC, if he can mold The Golden Calf of Bristol into a solid QB he can easily do it with Newton and get better results. Newton is so physically gifted.

i could see us getting McDaniels, BUT do remember that The Golden Calf of Bristol did NOT start until week 15, he didnt come in on day one and take over, Kyle Orton did.

The TD pass was a fake rollout to the right and throwback to the left, exactly the play that Whitehurst threw a TD pass on against STL. If you think he was reading the defense on the right, center, then left, you are crazy.

yeah, honestly, i wasnt a fan of the TD pass either, that's a play that usually wont be made in the NFL.

Go online and research for yourself. I read several articles that said he was arrested for larceny (stealing) and burglary (from someone's home). When police came to question him he threw the lap top out the window (I wonder why). He was booked for the crimes above and it appears that there was a plea bargain to receipt of stolen goods (lesser charge). If you have information that contradicts this, please post it.

True, honestly there IS evidence he did this, i just dont think it's as big a deal as some make, that's NOT my issue with him.

He actually didn't accept a "plea deal". He was not convicted. The charges were thrown out with the understanding he would take a course on felony behavior or something.

Uh, i didnt say he took a plea deal, just said it's true that there was EVIDENCE that he did it, i said it myself, it was a stupid mistake, but that's not my issue with him

How about we wait till the combine before we judge a player mmmmk.

I would hate to have another meltdown if we pick him.

i think the combine will show us that he's athletic and i think he could run a 4.40, but it's hard to do this in the pros. there's going to be debates and of course arguments on this all the way until April. you have your people who just dont want Newton, your people who want Newton, you people who think Newton isnt ready to start, but wont mind having him if he backs up a year to someone (me) and we have the people who think Newton will be good on day one and will take the panthers to the playoffs while rushing for over 1000 yards while passing for over 3000.

    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
