Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

What this entire argument boils down to is one thing: Some people like Cam Newton and some people don't. I was asked to give my reason why I would not draft Cam Newton with the number pick in the draft, and I did. (Citing character issues, and his one-year wonder dominance.)

Like I said two or three times, if it wasn't the number one pick, and the 10th or above, I wouldn't mind us taking the risk on him. The guy is an incredible athlete, but so is Armanti Edwards. He's just too high of a risk to wager 50+ million on.

I don't think he'd get 50+ million but you are right about character issues.

so... Time to move on to Gabbert? :P

Whoever the number one pick is, he's going to want similar to what Sam Bradford got last year, especially if the rookie wage scale isn't in place.

there is absolutely no way he gets what Bradford got with a rookie wage scale. None at all.

and there is a huge chance there is one, since it's the only thing both players & owners agree on.

CBA doesn't need to be done before draft for that to happen either.

But evendently it does since everybody compares black QBs to other black QBs. I have never hear anybody say Newton reminds me of a Steve Young or Fran Tarkenton.

Honestly because i dont think Newton's got as good an arm as Steve Young, i look at Newton's speed and think Vince Young, his arm though, it's big, but not sure how accurate, his arm is stronger than Luck's, but the issue is on reading NFL defenses and will he run too soon and some have issues on character and i am sure Richardson will look at that too.

thats basically what's driving most of these haters.

they see a black kid that made a mistake and bought a laptop from the wrong guy and think thug. they see a kid that got caught cheating in college and somehow think that applies to football. they look at the whole alleged pay to play thing that his dad supposedly arranged.

First off, i dont like how people are called haters when they just criticize a player, but if people are haters for critcizing Newton, then the people who criticize The Golden Calf of Bristol are haters too. anyways, the stolen computer, i moved on from, that's just him being stupid, the cheating does worry me a little bit, but that's not my issue, it's the question on if he will run too soon and not make all the reads. As for his dad, something happened with his dad which is why he's being limited from Auburn. i dont know what happened or care now, what's done is done. i just think Newton is one of those high risk, high reward picks, same think with Jake Locker.

My thoughts are that we have to go QB with our first round pick. So I have no problem with other people making cases for the other top QBs, I just can't buy it for people like Green, Peterson and Fairley. They don't help you win ball games. And plus our WR wasn't our problem this year. QB was, that's why went through like 4.

I don't trust a 3rd rounder or later on a QB or do I trust Clausen. You can find DTs, WRs, and CBs in the later rounds that are gems. QBs in the later rounds are crap-shoots. QB is too crucial of a position to be hoping a late rounder pans out.

true and also the argument boils down to this other thing, some want to take this risk, some dont, whatever happens, happens, i just wonder (if we take Newton, Mallett or Gabbert first overall) how short of a leash they will have with the fans here. If one of those guys is drafted and they lose 12 to 14 games, how many Luck or Barkley to Carolina threads do we see???

white mans guilt? good lord, kid. you are a failed piece of work.

small minded people never cease to amaze me, esp. racist ones.

keep everyone in their nice little boxes so your silly little paradigm can be kept safe.

It isn't small mindedness, it's simple logic. Black quarterbacks are more often than not mobile quarterbacks. This mobility is a blessing and a curse. As opposed to developing normally by taking their lumps on bad reads, black quarterbacks are able to scramble and make plays with their feet that negate poor reads. Thus, it is looked at as a positive play on film the next day because it gained yardage. As a result, they're more inclined to make the same play next time out.

Once they arrive in the NFL, the scramble is no longer a viable option unless your athleticism is out of this world like it was in the case of Vick..... but Vick was a one in a lifetime talent.

Black quarterbacks are never baptized by fire. They never have to learn the position because they can bail themselves out with their feet. This is applicable in almost every case, but people are so afraid of sounding offensive that they ignore the clear and present facts.

You don't have to spend your weekends with your head buried in a playbook if you can go out there and tap dance all over the opposing defenses without ever having to make a difficult throw because college defenses cannot cope with your athleticism.

Call me racist if you want, but race is a factor and always will be a factor until white athletes catch up to black athletes in the athleticism department and all races are developed according to the same standards.
