Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

This is why I can't justify taking him with the number one pick. The exact reason.

The number one pick has to be as sure fire as possible. After a few meltdowns from the past (Ryan Leaf, here's looking at you), everyone has seen how far back missing on the number one pick sets you back.

Like I said in my last post: If we could somehow draft him 10th or 11th, I wouldn't mind at all. But he's number one. And with that one pick comes a huge financial investment.

I will admit he is similar to Russel and Jason Campbell but that dose not mean he is them. Besides what other QB or player of need says 1st round pick more then Newton. He is the best of this draft class.

The knock on Young was very similar to what Cam is facing now, the offense he played in, the amount of rushing attempts, and can he learn to read NFL defenses. The thing that separates the two of them (in terms of what they are when they came out) is arm angles and arm strength.

Cam has an NFL release, Vince has the weird sidearm delivery. Cam sets his feet better than Young did coming out, however Vince has improved on this since he came into the league. Cam has a cannon for an arm, but can throw with touch. Vince could always throw with touch, but doesn't have nearly the same arm that Cam does. Vince has improved since he came into the league, but not to the extent that many thought that he could, hence the constant disappointment in him. Only time will tell if Cam can make the leap that Vince never could.

yep, i agree Roaddog, you and i arent saying that he's not going to be good or great (as others may mis-word us), i just think he's a high risk, high reward type of player like Young and Vick were and Vick failed with the Falcons and Young showed promise at times, but his immaturity killed his Titans career.

I dont think he's Campbell, Campbell had a better arm, BUT Campbell is NOT fast, McNabb at his current age is faster than Campbell. his size is similar to Russell and so is his arm, but the worry is reading defenses and running too soon.

Nice. Using race as an excuse to not draft somebody. :out:

just get back in the your time machine and go back to the 18th century.

:banghead:

thats basically what's driving most of these haters. they see a black QB and automatically think VY or whatever failed QB that happens to be black they can think of.

they see a black kid that made a mistake and bought a laptop from the wrong guy and think thug.

they see a kid that got caught cheating in college and somehow think that applies to football.

they look at the whole alleged pay to play thing that his dad supposedly arranged and think scumbag even though the NCAA said there wasn't any wrong doing that took place and gave him the heisman.

they look at the heisman and think that has any bearing on the guys career one way or the other....fwiw, that isn't too far from the madden curse.

it's just people putting themselves in little boxes.

Don't worry. That little twinge you're feeling is called white man's guilt. Once you learn to suppress that you can start to evaluate things more clearly.

The last three black Heisman winning QB's are Troy Smith, Andre Ware, and Charlie Ward.

I would have the same criticism if we were thinking about drafting a white running back first overall. Or a white defensive back. When you have certain races that typically play better at certain positions, it's best to stick to that ideology because it's the formula that works.

White Heisman winning QBs haven't fared better.

The system they come from has loads to do with it. Other things like height, skill-set and prior coaching matter too.

Color is irrelevant.

Run-first quarterbacks and spread offense quarterbacks don't translate well to the NFL.

Color has nothing to do with it.

But evendently it does since everybody compares black QBs to other black QBs.

I have never hear anybody say Newton reminds me of a Steve Young or Fran Tarkenton.

...

holy crap.

kt was right about someone.

are you saying that if Newton ends up being scouted as the best quarterback in the draft and the #1 pick we should pass on him because of his SKIN COLOR?

plenty of reasons outside race not to talk newton.

He wasn't going to be reinstated - that is why he left. Burglary and larceny carry serious jail time. He somehow got those charges reduced. Probably b/c Florida didn't want the bad publicity and called in a favor.

I just don't think most on this forum realize the kind of money you have to invest with the #1 overall pick. People here think DWill is not worth $20 million for 4 years, but a guy like Cam is worth $50 plus million with all of these character issues. Look what VY did to Tennessee in such a short period. That team at the end of last year was one of the hottest teams in the NFL (not because of him - ie CJ) and look how fast he took them down.

Funny thing is, Vince was 5-5 as a starter with a QB rating of 98.6 this season. 10 TD to 3 Int. The Titans were leading that AFC South till Fisher decided to mess everything up for that team. Kerry Collins stunk it up for them and that's why they fell apart. Last year, they were 0-6 till he became the starter and finished 8-2 as the starter, throwing for 1879 yards, 10 TD's and 7 Int's and largely controlling his turnovers. Everyone rags on Vince, but the truth is that he saved Fisher's job not once, but twice. Vince is not nearly as bad as everyone seems to think, but most have bought into the media's words about him instead of actually stepping back and looking for themselves.

white mans guilt? good lord, kid. you are a failed piece of work.

small minded people never cease to amaze me, esp. racist ones.

keep everyone in their nice little boxes so your silly little paradigm can be kept safe.
