Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

This is why I can't justify taking him with the number one pick. The exact reason.

The number one pick has to be as sure fire as possible. After a few meltdowns from the past (Ryan Leaf, here's looking at you), everyone has seen how far back missing on the number one pick sets you back.

Like I said in my last post: If we could somehow draft him 10th or 11th, I wouldn't mind at all. But he's number one. And with that one pick comes a huge financial investment.

But no ones guaranteed anything. You can make a case for anyone projected in the top 5 as being great or a bust.

He was arrested for burglary and larceny. It was later reduced to receipt of stolen goods and he did some type of diversion plan so the charges were ultimately dropped. He was suspended from Florida and withdrew before they could kick him off the team.

yeah, he did screw up with the laptop, but there is a decent chance he would have been reinstated had he stayed... he was suspended before a lot of that came to light I think.

I thought you were referring to the test stuff with the thing about Auburn.

I don't want him for these reasons.

1. Heisman winners usually don't translate well to the professional game.

2. Neither do black quarterbacks.

3. He reminds me of Jason Campbell.

4. He stole a lap top.

5. How many professional quarterbacks have had a mug shot before they even entered the league?

Steve McNair made a career out of it. So did Warren Moon. Look at Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay right now making plays with his legs and arm. Knocking a player because he can make plays with his legs is not a smart way to evaluate a player.

Could he be the next JaMarcus? Sure. Still he could be the next Aaron Rodgers or Steve McNair also.

Moon and McNair were in different leagues at the time and as i recall McNair retired before the age of 36, so he got hurt because of those runs. As for Rodgers, he's a pass first quarterback, he looks at all his reads THEN runs. and yes Newton can be the next Rodgers, BUT he could be the next Russell and that's a high risk, high reward type of pick and it's best to go with more sure things.

Yeah, he said that he wasn't going to sign any free agents until the CBA is done. He didn't say that he wasn't going to sign any free agents. Nice try though.

No I know that, but who knows when that gets done. Other owners and GMs won't be as stingy and will try to sign FAs before the deal is met.

All I am saying is Clausen isn't the answer and I don't see an answer in FA either.

i don't blame KT for his rage.

I doubt it. As of right now, no one knows the status of their UFA/RFA, because the new CBA will try and extend the RFA term one more year, so some of the players that were to become UFA, will become RFA.

I think a lot of the owners will hold off on signing people until they see 1) how their free agent pool looks and 2) what kind of money is in the market after the CBA is done.

He wasn't going to be reinstated - that is why he left. Burglary and larceny carry serious jail time. He somehow got those charges reduced. Probably b/c Florida didn't want the bad publicity and called in a favor.

I just don't think most on this forum realize the kind of money you have to invest with the #1 overall pick. People here think DWill is not worth $20 million for 4 years, but a guy like Cam is worth $50 plus million with all of these character issues. Look what VY did to Tennessee in such a short period. That team at the end of last year was one of the hottest teams in the NFL (not because of him - ie CJ) and look how fast he took them down.

Yep, honestly, the only difference i see is Young's passes are weird when they are released, BUT other than that both are similar. both played in the spread, both ran alot and both worked under Gene Chizick. Newton's a high risk, high reward type of player.

The knock on Young was very similar to what Cam is facing now, the offense he played in, the amount of rushing attempts, and can he learn to read NFL defenses. The thing that separates the two of them (in terms of what they are when they came out) is arm angles and arm strength.

Cam has an NFL release, Vince has the weird sidearm delivery. Cam sets his feet better than Young did coming out, however Vince has improved on this since he came into the league. Cam has a cannon for an arm, but can throw with touch. Vince could always throw with touch, but doesn't have nearly the same arm that Cam does. Vince has improved since he came into the league, but not to the extent that many thought that he could, hence the constant disappointment in him. Only time will tell if Cam can make the leap that Vince never could.
