Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

I would call getting kicked out of Florida "quitting on your team mates" and certainly what he did prior to going to Auburn put himself in a position to quit again or more appropriately be asked to leave or get suspended. People here really live in a dream world if you think someone that is 21 or 22 can have all of this stuff and be squeaky clean.

uh what and what? where the hell did you hear that? All I heard is that there were unsubstantiated rumors he was sent to a judicial board at Florida, which were then debunked by someone who had served on the board and said they'd never had Newton pass through.

what "stuff" does he have?

edit:

Obviously there are "character questions" which is why I think JR passes but I'm not convinced he's the devil, VY-incarnate people think he is.

He was arrested for burglary and larceny. It was later reduced to receipt of stolen goods and he did some type of diversion plan so the charges were ultimately dropped. He was suspended from Florida and withdrew before they could kick him off the team.

Vince Young last season at Texas:

Comp/Att Yards Comp.% TD Int Rush Yards Avg. TD

212/325 3,036 60.5 26 10 55 1,050 6.8 12

Cam Newton 2010

Comp/Att Yards Comp.% TD Int Rush Yards Avg TD

165/246 2589 67.1 28 6 242 1409 5.8 20

As much as everyone may want them to seem different, Cam's numbers are very similar to Vince's in his last year at Texas. They are VERY similar in style, the only differences is Cam is younger and bigger than Young. Not saying that I believe that Cam cannot become a big time star in the League, but to discredit the amount of times that he's run in college as something that he's going to drop when he comes to the pros is ludicrous.

He is extremely raw as a passer although he does have a very good release and good footwork in the pocket. I will say this, if Cam Newton has anywhere near half of these amount of rushing attempts in any year that he's in the NFL, then he's going to be hurt, and that won't be good either for him or us should we pick him. Right now, he's an athlete playing QB, instead of a QB that is an athlete. If he's allowed time to sit, and truly develop though, he may be the most dangerous QB in the league in a matter of years. It'll all come down to how much he wants to be the best, and if they can surround him with the people to get him there.

I don't know where all of these others crazy rumors are surfacing from. lol.

I just think that the Panthers need to be wary of someone who may have serious character issues.

If we were drafting 10th or 11th, I would have no problem with selecting Cam Newton. But, since we have the #1, and we would have to invest so much money, that's why I'm worried.

Me being flat honest here, I'm not on the Cam Newton express for one reason and one reason only. He is a first read not open, take off kind of QB. sure it's cute and fun to watch in college, but it really doesn't work in the pros. He has very sound, (almost great) throwing mechanics in the pocket, he steps towards his receivers, has a cannon, and can throw with touch.

personally, i think his mechanics arent the best either, BUT those arent my main issues, my big issues are what you said, he's in an offense designed for him and i worry about him running too soon as well and not making all his reads, plus i dont know if his running will be as great as it was in college either.

having said that though, he will not get the one on one match ups that he has been getting with his receivers in the pros. Can he read a Defense well? If so, can he do it from under center while dropping back? is his pocket awareness good enough for him to not bail on a play when pressure gets near him before he takes off running? A QB running in the NFL should be a last ditch effort to gain positive yards if your receivers aren't open, not plays 1-35 in your playbook.

yep, very true on all points and those are ALL good questions on Newton. Many of these questions (plus a few others) were asked on The Golden Calf of Bristol. how will he read NFL defenses because he wont get one on one match ups and the corners are better in the NFL. Will he stay in the pocket and not run too soon???? All these are good questions and that's why i dont think we should take the risk on Newton, even though, i would NOT be shocked if we did, BUT with that said, it wouldnt shock me to lose 13 or 12 games in 2011 and hear the calls for Luck or Barkley in 2012 either.

Physically speaking, Newton is near the top of the draft class (If he declares). But for me there are just too many questions surrounding him regarding the way he reads a D and if he can be a pocket passer first, and a scrambler second.

yep and like i said, these questions are warranted. Guys like Young, Vick had tough times with the pass first, run second deal and had to spend some time on the bench to fix that issue, Newton has the size and arm to win with, but it remains to be seen how he will be in the NFL, Luck wasnt as big a risk, he was more of a sure thing, Newton isnt close to a sure thing, he's a high risk and high reward type of guy.

ok...jtm is a bit narrowminded and isn't interested in the truth. i'll just let him live in his little world.

i'm done with him. can't outpuke a buzzard.

If not wanting a player that has been accused of larceny, burglary, receipt of stolen goods, and bribery before being 22 - then I am guilty as charged.

This speculation is based on previous players with similar skill sets, not a personal vendetta against Newton.

Steve McNair made a career out of it. So did Warren Moon. Look at Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay right now making plays with his legs and arm. Knocking a player because he can make plays with his legs is not a smart way to evaluate a player.

His Comp % is 67% which is quite high for a QB that is so mobile. His footwork is sound, He has a NFL arm, and has the build for the NFL.

Could he be the next JaMarcus? Sure. Still he could be the next Aaron Rodgers or Steve McNair also.

Yeah I'm on the Cam bandwagon. Being a UF fan I saw a lot of him watching the SEC. While he is known for his athleticism and running ability, he really is more than just one dimensional. He is over looked as a passer IMO. People are gonna have different opinions on him and his future as a NFL QB but I see him being successful.

I would much rather have Cam Newton throwing to Gettis and LaFell than Clausen throwing to AJ Green and company. Clausen isn't the answer and I don't know if I trust a 3rd round pick or lower on a QB. JR has already stated that he won't look to sign a FA. I just don't trust Clausen as our QB, plain and simple.

This is why I can't justify taking him with the number one pick. The exact reason.

The number one pick has to be as sure fire as possible. After a few meltdowns from the past (Ryan Leaf, here's looking at you), everyone has seen how far back missing on the number one pick sets you back.

Like I said in my last post: If we could somehow draft him 10th or 11th, I wouldn't mind at all. But he's number one. And with that one pick comes a huge financial investment.

Yep, honestly, the only difference i see is Young's passes are weird when they are released, BUT other than that both are similar. both played in the spread, both ran alot and both worked under Gene Chizick. Newton's a high risk, high reward type of player.
