Cam Newton looking better and better!

Yea, I've somewhat gotten on the Cam Train. Watching his highlight videos (especially the season highlights at the bottom of http://whosright.com/poll/2010-auburn-tigers-cameron-%28cam%29-newton-heisman-trophy-highlights) got me wanting this kid. Preferably not with the #1 overall, I'd rather trade down to 3 or 4, but if he has a good combine we might need to use the #1 on him.

He seems to have at worst a decent arm and accuracy, he throws over the shoulder, has at worst decent vision, and most importantly of all: he is pretty much the anti-Clausen - Clausen's opposite in every way. He's tall, quick, not afraid, big hands, and strong arm. I wish I could find videos of just his throwing plays, most are about 75% running plays, but I think he's got a decent arm on him.

I wouldn't be opposed to Green, Peterson, or Newton at #1 overall, but I'd prefer to trade down 2 or 3 spots and take Newton. Maybe some team that really wants Peterson, but is afraid Denver will take him will trade with us. Denver definitely isn't taking Newton, his game is too similar to The Golden Calf of Bristol. Maybe the Browns will trade up to take Green or Peterson (that'd make a pretty nasty, young CB combo). I know if we trade too far, another QB hungry team will take him. Arizona, Buffalo, SF, and maybe Cincinnati and Tennessee will all be wanting QBs. For some reason, I see Buffalo going more after Mallett than Newton...or that Gabbert kid if his stock keeps rising. Same thing with Arizona, I see them going more after Mallett or maybe even Locker. I think SF, Cincinnati and Tennessee would be the biggest threats to taking Newton.

Fairley is one I wouldn't mind taking as a consolation prize if we trade too far back and Newton, Green, and Peterson are all gone.

How intelligent is he??!! By no means is Auburn University a push over university..This young man plays week in and week out in the toughest conference in college football, the SEC, and he reads and plays against the best and fastest defenses in the nation..I would say he is pretty dam intelligent

Depends on how easy it is to cheat

Honestly because of his character uncertainty up until now I didn't want him here. After spending some time watching his videos I am now 100% on board the Cam Train, hell I'm wanting to drive the damn thing. Why? Intangibles to start, Clausen doesn't have them and I don't see him turning into Breez or even Jake to be honest. Watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6eI5Kyrk4g and imagine a bigger & stronger Armanti Edwards which leads to an exciting offense on day one of this coming season. Can you imagine Newton with Dwill, Stewart, Smitty, Gettis, Lafell, Harris (ECU late draft pick), that would be a much improved offense compared to trying to pick up Green for Pickles to still suck it up all year. This draft should be all about Offense because lets face it that is our weakness and it always will be until we become more than a one dimensional team. Newton's size will make him hard to take down like Big Ben but with his elusive speed he can get the first down or more to keep the drive alive. As much as I wanted Luck I am now beginning to feel like him staying another year will be a blessing in disguise if we draft Cam.

Now if we could just find a coach already..... I'll take Gruden, can you imagine what he can do having Cam as his QB? Don't be surprise if JR hires someone that contradicts the press conference.

Be careful about making this Cam vs. Jimmy. Jimmy won't be the starter next season regardless.

NEWTON'S STRENGTHS ARE THINGS THAT WERE GOD-GIVEN. HIS WEAKNESSES ARE DUE TO HIS BEING ABLE TO GET BY ON HIS GOD-GIVEN ATTRIBUTES.

Strengths: Athleticism, arm strength, size

Weaknesses: Character, work ethic, Football IQ

These characteristics also belong(ed) to Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf.

Can someone that knows something about QB's break him down? How much film does he watch, does he look to throw first instead of run? Does he read Defenses well? Where does he throw the ball? Does he hit recievers in stride? Does he have a fast release. We need a solid QB coach here regardless of weather or not we draft a QB.

Newton could be more comparable to McNabb if coached right. I would like to get Kolb and let Newton grow more before starting him right away. Also, a competant QB coach would be sweet.

i don't know about playing styles being the same, but i really do think that mcnabb would be an excellent mentor for newton and i actually don't think that mcnabb would be a horrible option to play ahead of newton if it was needed for a year. but as a mentor he would be incredibly valuable showing him the same things he showed vick. about how to be a positive influence and a professional. i think a lot of vick's maturation could be credited to mcnabb's influence. for those who have issues with newton's supposed character shortcomings, this would really help him be a guy that keeps him out of trouble.

I cant say Newton's going to have a bad rookie year with evidence, BUT you (or ANYONE else) can say that Cam Newton's going to light it up, run for 1000 yards, pass for 3000, be rookie of the year and make the playoffs!!!!!!! When it comes to drafting you have to base it on how they will TRANSLATE to the NFL. In other words, look at the offense they play in, the reads they make and the team they are on. WHY do people say that The Golden Calf of Bristol will fail, but say Cam Newton will be a star without evidence????? i will tell you why, they guess (from watching him) and think he has to work, well, i see flaws in Newton's game and NFL team's WILL noticed the Alabama game and see how to beat him, NFL team's are NOT college teams, Newton wont be outrunning NFL players like he's doing in college, he will have to pass consistantly from the pocket.

as much as i would like it, i wouldn't expect a rookie QB to get us to the playoffs or even necessarily a >.500 season. what i want to see is him making real progress every week and showing that he can get this team down the field and into the endzone and keep this team close. i want to see comebacks and a fight and an ability to lead this team (none of those things were seen in clausen, imo).

no rookie is a lock to be a superstar, esp. right out of the gate and you have to expect some growing pains, but you also have to see successes when they get PT.

i don't think playing in the pocket will be an issue for newton. i don't expect him to play a lot from under center, though, and i don't really think it's all that necessary in the right offense either. the right offense for him would be the pistol which very well could and does work in the NFL.

Agree with what you said about Newton and his potential. As for the pistol offense- that is one possibility but not necessarily the only or best option for a QB like Newton. The pistol offense lines up the QB 4 yards behind the center and the running back 3 yards behind which is fine but is not that different from lining up the quarterback 7 yards back and lining up the running back beside him to one side or the other. The advantage for the quarterback in the shotgun is more time, better vision and he doesn't have to drop back in order to set up as he would in the pistol. Plus the pistol typically uses a single back while we use two backs which teams often use with a pro set shotgun formation (quarterback 5 yards back with a running back to either side). Both Indy and New England use a shotgun formation as their primary set. The advantage for the pistol is that it is hybrid between the shotgun and traditional drop back offense and give you some of the advantages of the shotgun formation while not necessarily signalling that we are going to pass out of it.

I could see us using aspects of it but would want whoever we have at QB to be able to use the shotgun, pistol and straight handoff formations to avoid signaling to the defense what we were going to do like happened under Davidson. But as a base offense I would rather see the shotgun pro style setup versus the pistol. If we go to more of a 3 wideout look and primarily run a single back formation , then I might be more in favor of a pistol formation.
