If we develop a good scheme next year, losing Peppers won't really hurt that much. In the past few years we had an average to poor scheme with a few guys who could make plays. If we developed a better defensive scheme it would maximize our talent and elevate our play. There are a lot of teams without superstars who have been good for some time. Look at Piitsburgh for example. They have a few defensive stars but they also have alot of good guys who shine in that system. Woodley and Harrison account for over half their sacks. And their secondary is average at best. But they have a great defensive scheme that keeps oppponent off balanced.

Unfortunately we won't be running their scheme or anything close to it, but the fact is that having a great scheme makes up for average to good players more so than a few superstars make up for a poor scheme, IMO.

They have two of the biggest defensive stars in the NFL one of the best if not the best NT's in the game, great LB's and very good corners. It is by no means a team made by their scheme.

Pitt's defensive talent makes the LeBeau's scheme shine, not the other way around.

I agree with our point, but to say that the Steelers secondary is "average at best" is incorrect. I have watched them. The Steelers' defensive motor lies in their line to be sure, but their secondary handles its business as well. Their defense is complete. They are #1 in passing defense, and #2 in rushing defense.

Thats the ever ending story about the chicken and the egg...

The truth is probably somewhere in between... But lets for fun look at Steelers D

It all starts upfront with the D-line

Casey Hampton NT is probably one of if not the best NT i the league. NT is the most important position in a 3-4 scheme.

He was picked in the first round at number 19 so no surprise he turned out great.

Brett Keisel DE was picked in the 7 round and could very well be a LeBeau player.

Aaron Smith DE Was picked in the 4 round.

They all have been playing their entire NFL lifes at Steelers

James Harrison LB was undrafted and have not played for another club tough he was a Raven for a short time.

Larry Foote was a 4th round pick. Never played for another team.

James Farrior was a 1 round pick and had a fantastic season as a Jet the year before becoming a Steeler.

LaMarr Woodley was a 2nd round pick.. Only in his second season.

Troy Polamalu SS. Maybe the heart and sole of this defense along with Hampton. He also was a 1st rounder

Ryan Clark FS was a UFA but played and produced some at Redskins.

Ike Taylor CB is a 4th rounder and have played in a Steeler uniform his whole NFL Life

Deshea Townsend CB is a 4th rounder and have also played there his entire NFL life.

If I should conclude something on this then I would say that they have two 1st rounders at two really important positions in a 3-4. But the area were Lebeau is a master is in pass rush and it seems he can create a star out of nothing to rush the passer. Therefore he can have two 4th rounders playing like stars on CB and a UFA a FS.
