Adam Gold and Joe Ovies of 99.9, The Fan, in Raleigh are saying that Jerry Richardson is a good guy but a bad owner, based on what has transpired lately, plus his press conference.

Now, I didn't listen to the entire press conference, but I have heard bits and pieces, and their take gives plenty of food for thought.

I am paraphrasing what I believe they are saying, but you may want to take it with a grain of salt:

Basically they are saying that Richardson is missing the forest for the trees---he's being penny wise and pound foolish. Yes, he is the owner of the team, but the team is actually civic property. It is a part of the fabric of community. And as such, you cannot run it like the traditional business. The business of an NFL team is really in growing the value of the team by filling the seats---by winning. You put a good product on the field, and the value of the team will grow. According to Gold and Ovies, Jerry Richardson is putting his "partners" before his customers, and this is shortsighted when it comes to owning an NFL franchise. Richardson basically said as much in the "presser". Moreover, they basically said that he blamed the fans for not firing Fox last year because the fans didn't want to pay an increase in ticket prices. Basically, he is saying that I would have gotten a new staff before, if it wasn't for you cheap fans. News flash: the $11 million that he would have had to pay has an appreciably small effect on the ticket prices. Jerry was just being cheap. The main force that determines ticket prices is the market---supply and demand, and other owners who were trying to do it the cheap way, have actually lowered their ticket prices after they got their new stadiums, and found out that this was a more successful approach in as far as raising the overall value of the franchise.

Moreover, they said that why would a PSL owner want to invest money in a team that goes about basically gutting the team by being cheap, and that is more concerned with trying to kowtow to other investors who have already made the bulk of their fortunes in more traditional business ventures---who essentially have bought into the franchise as a status symbol. They have intimated that Jerry is saying the right things, in as far as the franchise will be in a better position coming out of a possible walkout, but that does anyone really believe that Richardson is going to spend the money necessary to bring in the proper talent and staff after the CBA is hammered out? Looking at his history, then you have your answer. Just look at how Richardson has basically said that he is going to get an assistant on the cheap.

They also said the epitome of Richardson's shortsighted ways is how he let Julius peppers walk for nothing. He let the most valuable asset of the franchise walk because Richardson was scared that he might have to pay him. This was not a good move.

Now, I am not saying that I agree or disagree with what they are saying, but I will tell you that a few people called in, including a PSL owner who said that if Richardson had had that press conference before the season, then he would have gotten rid of his license.

I will tell you this. Like I said about his letter to the PSL owners, I think that Richardson doesn't have the concern that it would seem like he would, for fans in general. IMO, Richardson is out of touch with Joe Blow Panthers fan who will spend time and hard earned money, and make the sacrifice to come and see the Panthers play at BOA (and all the things that come with it, like the exorbitantly priced concessions), or buy their official NFL licensed gear and paraphernalia. Unlike us fanatics on the Huddle, most people will only get on board and stay on board if the owner is committed to always putting a great product on the field (notwithstanding times of rebuilding or transition), but Richardson was more committed to his business partners and his own conservative frugality than actually making the sacrifice to put the best product on the field the last couple of years (at least). And I don't want to hear about how much it costs to run an NFL franchise, blah blah blah. Richardson, and his partners, have more than enough money to pay whoever they want to come here. Like Gold said, the NFL is set up so that even an idiot owner can't help but make money at the end of the day.

Richardson needs to think of the Panthers as a product that is owned more by the community than just a business venture owned by himself and his super rich cronies.

I was going to leave smart ass remark, but why bother? All I can say is, what's the point? he isn't selling the team...so everyone that doesnt like him is wasting time. find a new team...

Nobody is telling him to sell the team, just to modify his way of thinking about the team.

the VERY last person I would EVER trust one's opinion would be Adam Gold and Joe Ovies.. I've spent my time listening to these fools over the years and at one point had to say enough is enough..

These 2 are the biggest haters on radio.. they get off on talkin trash about the Panthers and anyone they set their sights on..

I'm pretty sure Adam Gold has a napoleon complex and uses his show as therapy to judge the world by..

There isn't one radio personality in the US who gets tripped up by his callers more than Adam Gold.. He will spout off the most ridiculous poo and then someone will call in to make him look like a fool..

good sports talk radio is few and far between.. but these are the bottom dwellers of radio..

Joe Ovies is getting thrown in because he's with Gold, but he has his moments too.. it's ashame his radio career will go down the tubes because of his sidekicks incompetency..

I was shocked when I heard people on the forum over-reacting to JR's press conference.. There is nothing more predictable than Gold and Ovies giving their worthless f**king opinion about something they don't know poo about or could care less about...

watch the press conference and it should be more than obvious how they are quite simply piranhas looking to feast on something minor in order to boost their self-importance over the radio waves by exaggerating any and all situations..

The guy is the co chair of the NFL which is trying to make a big statement to the nflpa...he's not going to compromise his negotiations a month from the deadline

He's not a bad owner..just an owner that gas more than one dog in the fight. He has to look out for CBA progress as well as the panthers.

overall, I think Richardson has proven to be a good owner. In this particular business...whether it be player, coach or owner. Everyone tends to overreact and put too much stock in what just occured (good or bad).

One think Jerry has let happen....is he and his team have taken a HUGE PR hit.

He's not a bad owner..just an owner that gas more than one dog in the fight. He has to look out for CBA progress as well as the panthers.
