Good lord, stop bashing Jimmy....

You guys are treating him like a 5 year vet on an established team.

News flash. He was a college senior/NFL Rookie playing on one of the worst offenses in the league which featured 1 veteran WR and 0 run game. With all of that, he still made very few turnovers.

He does not have the arm to be an elite QB, but i have little doubt he is good enough manage games and win in the right offense.

He has had his fair share of humble pie, which i feel was good for him. But to treat him like a bust is very short sighted.

Love,

Meh.

I agree he couldn't have been in much worse of a situation this year, but having seen him play in about a dozen full NFL games, I'd be really shocked if he turned out to be an effective pro. In lieu of a full explanation, he just doesn't have "it," if you will.

I agree with Husker... he's not horrible and I don't think he's a full-time NFL starter, but I wouldn't call him a bust either.

Questions to ask yourself:

1. What incentive did Fox and company have to develop Clausen (and Pike, for that matter)?

2. Have Fox and company ever developed a young QB?

3. Did Rick Scherer take partial responsibility for screwing up Jake by having him throw to areas and not people? (yes) Even though Anderson had a little success under him, Did Scherer ever tutor a first round QB from Notre Dame who went on to bust?

4. Was Jeff Davidson his offensive coordinator? Nuff said.

5. How many snaps did Clausen take when the offensive line was intact? How many starting offensive linemen were out for the majority of Clausen's snaps?

6. Aside from Smith who was double teamed on almost every play, how many years of experience did his WR corps have?

7. Speaking of Smith, could you do your job at the age of 21 when the most celebrated, disinguished, recognizable face of the company constantly berrated you in public and through the media?

8. Speaking of pressure, would you be motivated in a positive way if your boss did not care about your future, was forced to keep you active, the best employee in the company ridiculed you, and a team of outsiders came in at the end of every day to ask you questions about your replacement?

9. Compared to other second round rookies in NFL history who were forced to start, Did Clausen underperform?

10. Have you ever struggled (when compared to more established, successful people in similar positions) when you started a job? If you improved, can you list the external factors that contributed to your growth? Did Clausen have those?

Not saying he is a superstar, but I am saying, as I have all year, that Joe Montana would have sucked under these conditions. Thanks Zod for starting this thread. Clausen is our punching bag because we have to blame someone.

Clausen isn't a bust yet. We gave Jarrett a few years to prove he couldn't get it done and we should give Jimmy the same. On the other hand people still defending him need to stop making excuses until he shows something to get excited about. He was flat out horrible this year and as much of the problem was on him as it was on the line or the receivers or anything else. On the other hand it doesn't mean he won't improve, get stronger, and work on his obvious issues down the road.

Plus we are getting a new staff who may be able to do more with him than Fox and Scherer did. At this point I am going to take the position that he is not yet an NFL ready quarterback and leave it at that. Lets wait and see what happens down the road.

With that said, not making moves to upgrade the position in the offseason would be almost criminal at this point. Nothing has shown me that he is the answer at this point. The onus is on him to improve and learn the position particularly defensive reads, audibles, and receiver progressions. With a new offensive system he should have his hands full.

If he didn't act like such a pussy I would agree with this. I've seen enough.

Again, he is a kid and thrown into an impossible situation viewed and analyzed by millions. He cannot say what he feels or defend himself. Give him a chance, he would not be a pussy as you call it. He has not protection and no support coaches. You think he should have paraded around like a stud? That would have pissed everyone off worse.

Your OC sucks. He sends in a pass play on 3rd and 12 (the draw plays of first and second down went for -2 yards) and you barely know the playbook. You go through the pre snap reads and you are looking over 3 second string linemen. Outside, you make sure the 2 rookie WRs are positioned correctly, go in motion at the right time. They struggle getting off the jam, the three linemen are quickly overwhelmed and you scramble for your life. Goodson misses his block and your choices are to throw into coverage, take a sack, throw it out of bounds. You throw it out of bounds. Fox shakes his head in disgust, the crowd boos and curses you. This happens 30 times each game, each week.

I could play for the Panthers and have few turnovers. I could hand it off, get sacked, and throw incompletions to the sideline. That means nothing when you are doing nothing like Jimmy to be productive.

He ignored his veteran WR and had one of better ground attacks in the NFL for the majority of his starts.

If you look at Playbook on NFL Network they analyze why Sam Bradford was successful this year. To keep it short and sweet, their OC put him in positions to win. Ours was too busy with his hand on his head to see the field to make the correct, QB friendly calls..

If you look at the Rams-Seattle game that very short passing game hurt Bradford as well. Seattle keep all the safeties cloer to the line of scrimmage expecting the short pass. It also hurt the ground game.

There is nothing wrong with short passes but in order to open up our running game we need to stretch the field and keep 9 guys out of the box.

Most teams with very short passes as a mainstay do not have great running games. So to say we should have gone to that for Clausen is not necessarily true.
