Posted this in another thread but felt it needed it own.

In a nutshell Head Coaches are almost a thing of the past. We should be hiring the Best Offensive Coordinator possible and best Defensive Coordinator possible. The Head Coach would still be the faces of the Coaches but wouldnt have the power to overrule play calling. He would be over practices and player performance reviews.

Richardson listed what he wants in head coach during his interview. Someone that will be a disciplinarian and that will follow the front office lead. Hurney even said they interviewed Fox wrong and wont make that mistake again. It wont be a interview in which the coach comes in and tells the Panthers what he wants to do. Hurney will be telling the interviewee this is how it is going to be do you have a problem with that.

So the Front office will dictate what the team does not the HC. . I wouldnt be surprised if the new head coach will even pick his Coordinators. Look at Pittsburgh you think if Tomlison ever gets fired Lebau is out of a job?

Honestly I wouldnt mind it like that. DC has free rein on his side and Offensive Coordinator his side. HC would be just be there for all the other stuff.

I've suggested this many times, that I feel this is the way to go. Tomlin is a smart, charismatic guy, and to me appears to be a leader of men. He makes the final calls in key situations but gives great authority to his coordinators, which is made obvious in the high regard LeBeau is held in.

Even Andy Reid for example, is considered a great mind on the offensive side, and is virtually the OC and the HC. But, he has ALWAYS to my knowledge given the authority over the defense to a knowledgeable DC (Johnson, and now McDermott) because he doesn't specialize in it.

Where I feel we were extremely wrong with Fox is allowing him total control over every facet. It got guys like Henning fired b/c they were virtually mantlepieces while Fox was really calling the shots. Same for the defense, although that was his specialty. He should've turned total control of the offense to a guy like Mike McCoy IMO after Henning. If the guy specializes in one side of the ball, he should definitely give control of the other to a coordinator.

Problem with this is, when that coordinator becomes successful, they'll be leaving to become a HC in no time (Del Rio)...

We've had coaches who have micromanaged the team, leaving their imprint on all phases of the game. It works, and works well, for about three seasons. After that third season, it becomes too difficult to keep up that level of involvement and most coaches will have seen at least one of their first pick assistants get poached by another team.

Richardson and Hurney know what they want out of a team, they need someone to execute that plan. And a good head coach should be about meeting the overall goal of the organization. He just has to be able to delegate to his assistants the duty and the marching orders.

Still, I wish we had Brian Billick coming here.
