AJ Green

we do need to pay attention to the offense...but WR is more of a risk than just about any other position. why is it that there have only been 2 WRs ever taken first overall?

it's a huge risk and it wouldn't get us more wins. it just adds to an already crowded WR corps.

Because usually there's always been a "sure-thing" QB or "running back" right there at the top?

2 you say? I say a perfect opportunity for the Panthers to make some history for a change! Or change the history! Either way, we should definitely take Green.

Have any of you ever watched Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald? AJ Green has that kind of combination of size, speed, and skills... Truly a once every few years prospect.

I think if we don't take him, this fan base will cry when another average QB is passing to a Lafell, Gettis, and now a Smith who will probably no longer command the need for double coverage.

Boy it's going to be ugly. One thing's for sure, a guy like Green will get some double coverage. That means Smith will be in single coverage. I LIKE THAT!

That would also mean Lafell and Gettis will push themselves to the edge in training camp fighting for that #3 improving both of them to the point where we may be willing to pull a decent trade for one, or trade Smith....either way, another good thing.

I can't get excited for someone from UGA. Can't bring myself to do it. That's the TRUE football of Georgia, and their fans are worse than Falcons fans (if you can even imagine that).

Isn't Thomas Davis from UGA?

Personally, I like Julio Jones better than Green. We need a DT before either one. Fairley is the only real option other than Luck.

Forget position, or how a player fits onto our team as constructed, draft the one that will be the best player. Draft Green if he's Moss, Peterson if he's Revis, Fairley if he's Sapp, or Bowers if he's Peppers. We can't pass on an elite talent because of a player currently on our team, or because he may not be the best player for our team next year. There are no elite talents at WR, CB, DT, or DE currently on the team, and aside from who we draft, we're not contending next year.

Even though Luck is staying in school, in all likelihood, one of the players being evaluated will be one of the best players in the NFL at his position. Hopefully Hurney and our scouts can find that player.

^ Definitely, I've been saying that for a while now. If we drafted a QB and he's another Clausen, would our QB position have gotten any better? Same with Fairley and the D-line. Go with the safest, most dynamic player imo, positional needs only come into place if you have multiple prospects which are equally talented. I don't like the look of Fairley at all, and I'll be damned if we draft him just because he plays DT.

Green is the best value for the pick as it currently stands. The thing I find funny is, everybody wants new life and a "face for the franchise", yet want to take Fairley or Dareus, neither who I would say is near the level of Suh. If the player that is taken at 1 doesn't have the ceiling of a top 10-12 player in this league, then he shouldn't be considered (not saying that Peterson isn't elite, but corners can be found anywhere and play well given that they are put in the right scheme. )

AJ Green gives you that elite talent that you can place under Smith and develop while Smith is still somewhat useful. It's better to get the talent a year early, and bring it along at your pace, instead of looking for the player when it becomes a need. ALWAYS. Anyone remember when Moose left and it was just Smitty? Remember how bad it was when Smitty was taken out of games? Now imagine that once Smith leaves and it's up to Gettis and LaFell to become the 1/2?

Oh and as far as the Giants are concerned, yeah they do have a nice core of WR, but the only time that offense was truly dangerous was when Plaxico was there.

Fans wanted a face of the franchise with Luck being the #1 pick. Now I doubt most people care about someone being a figure head for the new regime. Personally, I just want the best talent available. And I'm thinking defense. Might as well stack up on defense and make it one of the most elite units in the league just like in 2002 and work on offense later. I mean... we have already addressed offense to a degree and still will be, but I think defense is the way to go with the #1 pick.

Who could we really take that would make us a dominant D next year in this draft though? With AJ, signing a vet QB, and getting some FA linemen on offense, our O should definitely improve from what we had a year ago, while still leaving the D to get better as the youth progress. The only concern that I have right now is the fact that 3 of the 4 DC's that we're looking at hiring are 3-4 guys, and I would assume should we hire any of them, we would be switching defenses and thus a bigger need to go D on draft day.
