I am starting to get increasingly concerned about Jalon Walker as a prospect, maybe I am just starting to overthink things

Everyone is getting picked apart this time of year. A month ago Tet was not projected to get past Jacksonville, but now he is sliding.

 you have Xavier Leggette & Jalen Coker starting on the outside at WR two very young & inexperienced players..

if the Panthers want to go out there on a limb & reach for a player based solely off what the team needs instead of drafting BPA at #8 then the kid from Texas Matthew Golden would be the perfect player /fit for this team right now 

i guessi am confused to why it has to be a defensive player with the first pick ? & I am also confused to what happened to blah blah blah over & omg over again with just about everyone saying the same thing well you know  Bryce Young was drafted to the worse situation possible he had no one to throw the ball 2 & by far not even close  the worse group of WR's in the NFL / to all of a sudden that's not an issue anymore because why we have XL & Coker ?

alot of things makes no sense just like drafting Mykel Williams at #8 makes no sense  ...just saying

Maybe because it was historically the worst defense ever and the offense made strides second half the season. The defense couldn't stop a nose bleed and was the scapegoat for a lot of losses. The Panthers atleast have an identity on offense to run the ball, and they were able to do that on some of the best teams in the league. They cannot however stop the run, rush the passer or defend the pass consistently because they can't pressure the QB enough. Hell, they had to start practice squad players a lot of games. Only 2 stand out players on defense and one of them is coming back from a season long injury. If they decided to go defense the entire draft nobody should even have a problem with it.

I'm the opposite. I had concerns earlier in the offseason, but the more I read/watch on him the more I like him.

I will say, the one concern I do have with Walker is scheme fit if we ever switch back to a 4-3 defense.

I don't see him as a 4-3 EDGE or a 4-3 off-ball linebacker full time, so where would he fit? We'd need to have a D.C. who is creative enough to maximize his pass rush skills from a position that typically doesn't rush the passer as often in a 4-3 defense.

It can be done (see how the Raiders used Khalil Mack early in his career) but it'd require finding the right D.C. and that is always an iffy proposition.

He's pretty much the same size as Luke and TD

The Athletic FS had a Panthers fan write in about Mykel vs Jalon.

Derrick K was surprisingly in favor of Mykel but gave a pretty compelling argument. You’re getting a baseline great run defender with some nice pass rush potential. You’re not getting the hyper athletic, violent, burst off the snap type, but he’s a grinder who can maintain a great level of play throughout a game. He’s the ideal type to eventually have paired with the more peppy/athletic edge rusher. No one says to avoid a 1B just because you don’t have or can’t find a 1A. And who knows, he could still become a double digit sack guy. 86” wingspan is monster.

With Jalon, you’re using him as an EDGE. So you’re banking him fitting a super rare spot, that only Parsons has really followed through at. Myles Jack and others just didn’t work out as well. They mentioned you may just be getting a shorter Luvu-plus rather than a Parsons-lite. 

Mykel at 8 will not surprise me in the least, and it could be a solid move.

Yes, but they weren't playing EDGE. If we draft Walker, it shouldn't be to play off-ball; he needs to be rushing the QB. I'm not sure I see him being a full time DE in a 4-3.

He would be a LB and would be good at it, but I don't see us changing from a 3-4 anyway

Correct. Greg Cosell mentioned this on the Ross Tucker podcast. They mentioned Micah Parsons had the same position questions when he came out but the big deference is Parson's size. He's 6'3 and 250lbs Walker is 6'1 247lbs and cannot play end in 4-3 defense. Both Cosell and Tucker really liked him though.

I still have them taking Walker.  Don't care who else is available at the pick it's going to be Walker.
