Division opponents thread: Bucs, Falcons Saints news

Drafting Dart any higher than the late first round is a reach, massive reach.  There's going to be 3 guys sitting there in the second round, Milroe, Ewers and McCord that if someone gets antsy, the price to move will be MUCH more palatable.  Honestly, the difference in Dart and the next 3 guys is minimum.

Dart has good size, throws a beautiful ball but man that system he is coming from might have fried him and installed some bad habits.

Dennis Allen was a huge reason for Carr being in New Orleans in the first place. The coach who helped bring Carr into the league in Oakland in 2014 was fired in November. So that was the first sign that material change could be coming in the team/quarterback dynamic. Soon after Kellen Moore was hired in mid-February, a second sign emerged—with rumors percolating that Carr might want out.

While how and when and whether at all the trade request officially went in is unclear, other teams were under the impression that Carr was seeking a new home, as some quarterback-needy ones considered him a potential option for 2025.

The door seemed closed on that in early March when the Saints converted $28.745 million of his $30 million base salary into a signing bonus (taking his base all the way down to the league minimum). In doing so, it locked New Orleans into paying that money for 2025, meaning if Carr was traded, the Saints would be paying Carr to play for someone else this fall. The move also was made without Carr’s blessing, since the Saints had the contractual right to do that (it’s common that teams have that conversion lever written into a contract).

So at that point, you essentially had a quarterback who was at best uneasy with his new circumstances, and a team doing everything it could to show him they weren’t going to let him go, whether he wanted to stay.

Which brings us to where we are now. The Saints knew about this shoulder issue. What I’m less sure about is if they view it as something that was actually threatening his 2025 season. The story I’ve heard is that Carr’s camp has told people that this actually stems from his ’23 AC joint sprain, which never fully healed.

Update- more insight..... its fugly. It seems carr mainly came for Dennis Allen, then he was fired and the saints wanted to try to avoid paying the past can kicking one more year. They didn't ask Carr about if he wanted to stay, just did a new deal. Carr's shoulder flared up right after.

Seems they should have cut him, just a move that will haunt them for years.....just LOL

I am little shocked and not entirely convinced that any player would allow their career to be determined by Dennis Allen. He has little credibility and zero accomplishments in the NFL.

Saints are signing Olave for his 5th year option, but not OT Penning

Saints took Olave in the first and then traded back into rd 1 for Penning.  No surprise on Penning whom was benched multiple games because of poor play.  But they wasted a lot of draft capitol to get him.  Bust.  Olave is also risky because of his concussion issues.

Could that mean an OT in the 1st is in play for NO?

    • 1) This is their last chance to get decent draft compensation. Is that better? A team who trades for a player on an expiring contract (the 5th year option in this hypothetical) is not going to give up much. The trade is essentially for the first right to sign the player to the second contract. 2) Compensatory pick is dependent on net free agency outcome and performance. A potential, late 3rd round pick next year is not as valuable as a 2nd round pick this year. These are forward-thinking roster moves that winning franchises make. I hope that makes sense to you.
    • That couldn't be any more incorrect. They can still pick up his 5th year option and then trade him next offseason.  They can still decline the option, let him walk in FA next year, and as long as he has a good season will likely bring them back a 3rd round comp.  And they could do either of the above and then still franchise tag him afterwards and then trade him for what would be a really good return, assuming he continues to progress and stay out of trouble. All of this while he's only costing them $5.4 million against the cap and trading him would only get them $3 million in cap savings. It makes zero sense to trade him this offseason unless they have serious concerns about him or unless they get a godfather offer they can't turn down.
