Panthers interviewing Ron Rivera

I would piss my pants if we somehow got Harbaugh as HC...Luck as QB...and Rivera as DC.

That would be the trifecta.

As good as that would be, it will take a couple strong draft picks on the offensive side of the ball. For nine straight drafts we have drafted blocking wide recievers, run blocking linemen and defense players. Change is good, it's just might take a while to see the results.

Another thing to consider, we're going to be facing Brees, Ryan and Freeman for 10+ years. If we can get someone that will have a top 5 defense year in and year out, then we wont necessarily need a high powered offense to contend with the rest of our division.

Although that still isn't an excuse not to draft Luck if he's there.

First off, Rivera is a hell of a coach and I for one would be excited if he is the next HC of the Panthers.

With that said I really wish people would realize that the next head coach should not be a defensive minded coach. NOR SHOULD HE BE AN OFFENSIVE MINDED COACH!

There are some really great OC and DC out there that never have nor never will make good HC. There are also some amazing HC that would have never made it in the NFL as a coordinator. Being great at being a coordinator can be a hint as to how a coach may preform as the HC but that usually has more to do with what happens behind the scenes more so than actually coaching the players and calling plays.

When I was young I asked my dad why a defensive minded coach needed a defensive coordinator. He told me that position coaches coach players and that coordinators coach units (offense, defense, special teams) but a head coach's main responsibility is to coach the coaches and have their hand just a little in everything that is going on.

IMO, that is the reason why all of Belichek's coaches have failed as head coaches and why Belichek continues to be the best in the game...

I'm getting excited about the fact that Rivera is already signed up for an interview. I'm hoping the next few weeks are full of activity from the FO.

Oh, is there a specific time when you can sign coaches or can we pull the trigger whenever?

We can sign a coach anytime now. Will have to do the Riveria interview but after that it could happen in the next few days to a month. Depending on who they want. Cant Hire or interview and playoff coaches yet but we are not looking at any of them.

I guess Fox is right, we are cheap.

Rivera really is a great coach though. If we think about it, no coach in NFL history has ever won the Super Bowl with two different teams. And it doesn't look like we have a shot at Harbaugh. and if you look at the last two SB winning coaches: Payton and Tomlin...neither were big names. They were up and coming coordinators looking for their first shot as head coach.

hey, how did Mike Shanahan work out for the Redskins this season?

The Rooney Rule is a joke. How many minority candidates sit through a "token" interview knowing the team is going in a different direction anyway, just following the rules. It's stupid to force the issue, when it looks like minority head coaches are showing up around the league due to their own merits, not BS politics.

I do feel bad for the guys called in just to meet a requirement.
