Stole this from this board rocks. Author: Skidmark. Thought I would throw it out to the hounds to see what intelligent people think, but I want to encourage morons to reply as well.

EMERGENCY THEORY:cool:

I am looking at this thing from JR's perspective, because he has the power to change this team overnight. The letter to the PSL owners basically admitted a mistake and promised that he would do everything in his power to put a quality product on the field. In addition, PSL payments/ticket orders are being sent out soon. Do you pump up the fan base and then bring in Grimm? Do you make all these promises and not do everything you can to bring in a big name coach, especially one that will basically lock up Luck? Or do you fart around and hire some low-priced assistant coach and have Luck return to Stanford? He would not be allowed in public after such a move.

Jerry was caught up in winning the battle between the players and owners and decided to clean house. He figured it would position him to return in a good situation. I also think he figured the other owners would follow suit. They did not. His plan backfired, and his team became the laughing stock of the league. He admits most of this in the letter.

However, the timing of the letter is also important. We had three games left and it looked like we were going to get the first pick. He sends out a letter. We then lock up the first pick, and before we play the last game, he fires the staff. I think talks began when the letter went out. I think he fired Fox when San Francisco fired Singletary and became the front runner for Harbaugh.

Jerry does not have to hire a GM, so he has a leg up on the 49ers. They are scrambling to hire one and then they will interview. We can interview now. Maybe JR does not have the $$ to compete with SF for Harbaugh, but he has the chip he needs to get Harbaugh, who is the chip he needs to get Luck. Two birds, one Fox.

It is also a coincidence that we fired Fox three days before the Orange Bowl, where I imagine Hurney and JR are right now.

He isn't paying attention.

Fox hasn't been fired JR just said he wasn't going to be resigned.

He is still on the payroll for a bit.

Good point, but Fox is under contract until Feb something. Can we interview while he is under contract?

I'm not sure how it goes, but with all the coaching vacancies I don't believe JR will just do nothing for a month while everyone else is working. If he has to officially be fired a month before I think he will....

Why are people constantly saying that Richardson doesn't have money to compete with SF? He's paying Fox 6.5 mil this season.

Seriously, this. One season of cutting fat and suddenly Richardson doesn't pay people. Nevermind the constant contract offers to make Peppers the highest paid defensive player. Nevermind the fat extension for Delhomme that was later just paid to him over the next year.

Richardson's got this team poised and ready to be spending money the RIGHT way with this youth movement.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
