Yeah i was thinking this too. You dont let go of all the staff in case the incoming coach wants to keep some of them. Think it is a given now that we already have a head coach hired just waiting on the end of the season. If that is the case it has to be a college coach or someone out of football. Now the question is how did they get around the Rooney rule?

They wouldn't get around the rule.

Even if they tampered, they'd still have to go through the interview process.

By the way, there is a possible downside to this for Harbaugh fans.

Harbaugh has a strong connection to current - now former - TE Coach Geep Chryst. It's been theorized that Harbaugh might want Chryst as an OC or a QB coach. He also is acquainted with Strength and Conditioning Coach Jerry Simmons and OL Coach Dave Magazu.

So, if you take this announcement at face value, it could mean bad news for Harbaugh fans.

With that said, if you look at this from the conspiratorial standpoint, remember that there's nothing preventing Harbaugh from hiring anyone back if he gets the job.

That, plus if you did have a backroom deal with Harbaugh, and you let it be known that all the coaches except those with a prior connection to Harbaugh are being let go, you may as well just grab a megaphone, stand in the middle of the street and shout to the world "Hey NFL, we're tampering!" :sosp:

Hurney being kept is not that bad. He is a salary cap expert and you will need that with the new cba. I think the new regime will make more decisions on drafts and FA players though.

Makes sense. Coaches usually pick their own staff - some might be retained by the new coach but it stands to reason that a new coach would get to hire their own minions.

Correct, this announcement tells me we don't already have a new HC lined up and we want to make sure folks know we have a vacancy before they go accepting jobs with someone else.

Given the 49ers aggressive pursuit of Harbaugh, I have to think the decision to announce this has something to do with getting word to Harbaugh that we will definatley have a vacancy and oh by the way... we have the # 1 pick in the draft so he can bring his franchise QB with him (something no other team can offer).

That's not tampering. Tampering rules keep 1 NFL team from recruiting players and coaches from other NFL treams while they are under contract. In thiis case, it would be up to Harbaugh to settle issues with Stanford so he can leave.

You have to let a new head coach choose his entire staff. You can't bring a guy in and tell him hey here are the guys I want to work under you. It just doesnt work that way.
