The official salary #s for tagging Peppers.

A staggering $16.683 million ducats.

According to figures released today by the NFL Players Association, the Carolina Panthers would have to pay Julius Peppers more than $7.6 million more than the average franchise tender amount for defensive ends in order to keep him for the 2009 season under a franchise tag.

The collective bargaining agreement requires teams who franchise players to give then one-year tender offers of an average of the top five 2008 salary cap figures of players at the position, or a 20 percent raise over their '08 salary, whichever is greater.

Peppers falls under the latter category. His $13.9025 million cap number for '08 was more than $5 million more than any other defensive end and fifth highest in the NFL behind only quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer and Aaron Rodgers.

Since the '09 franchise tender amount for defensive ends (average of top five salaries) is $8.991 million, Peppers' tender would be $16.683 million, reflecting the 20 percent raise.

...gonna need a lot of players to restructure in order to both re-sign Gross and tag Peppers, and sign draft picks without doing anything else. Not only do we have to tag him, we need to have a reasonable amount of money to be able to do so in order to convince teams who don't want to give up draft picks, but want him this year instead of next, that we don't have to rescind it.

Jake "Turnover" Delhomme, 11 million dollar man, come on down to rework the numbers!

Lucas too, Jake and Lucas are both near the end of there contracts so their cap hits are more inflated than they should be, they are also making more money than they should be

Lucas will probably be given his walking papers. He doesn't have the best reputation in the locker room, and whether or not the scheme was the problem in the way they made him defend the pass, they're of course going to look at him not earning his money, and being in his late 20s they are going to let him walk.

The infallible Delhomme will probably restructure, however.

if peppers doesn't sign the contract it doesn't hurt our cap. we can tag him and let him work out a trade if he wants to play somewhere else.

just because we slap his butt with the tag doesn't mean that we are going to have to pay him.

Does mean we are going to pay him no, but if he is tag, that money will count against the cap. And at certain times of the year the team has to be under the cap even if a trade is in the works.

So basically, if we tag him, that money will count against the cap until he is actually traded.

Also, if he gets mad that we tagged him and signs it and decides to play one year for all of that money ...we're screwed :lurk5:

We dont have to be under the cap till right before TC so its possible we could Trade him before that and be under the cap at that time.

I still feel though guys pep is gone. We are gonna tag Gross and let pep walk. Yea I know it seems unfair but the guy gave us 7 years so just be happy with that. Its the better move to keep a player here that wants to be here then to take a risk of losing players over one thats not happy.

oh, nothing personal Luke. Sorry that we let our best player on offense break your face and then in an effort to keep a beast on the defense that doesn't want to be here we are giving you the boot. I hope the next team you play for is twice as considerate as we've been.

Yea I have not herd much about him being a cancer ether. The fact is though he is counting 9 mill on the cap so if he dose still want to play he will have to restructure his contract for much lower. I doubt he will stay though.

    • THIS MIGHT PISS OFF SOME STEVE SMITH SR. FANS:  He WAS detrimental to this team.  Sure, he is on the hall of fame ballot and is probably our best player ever--but he punched 2 teammates--and that is the tip of the glacier.  Remember, I watched him haze and belittle Dwayne Jarrett at an OTA. Jarrett even reacted by giving me a hard hand slap when I mentioned it to him--.  I know bullying when I see it (educator who has written books about trauma caused by abuse and bullying) I have commented on the fact that nobody seemed to be friends with Smith except Kasay.  He was a bully and the coaches allowed it. Bunch of Alpha males chewing the tall grass. Here is a list of all the WRs Steve Smith 'mentored" after they were drafted:  2003: Walter Young 2004: Keary Colbert, Drew Carter 2007: Dwayne Jarrett, Rhyne Robinson 2010: Brandon Lafell,  Armanti Edward, David Gettis 2011: Kealoha Pilares 2012: Joe Adams That is 10 WRs drafted and only 1 had some degree of success, Brandon Lafell, who averaged around 600 yards a season for 8 years in the NFL--it is noteworthy that his numbers increased after leaving Carolina for NE.   This proves nothing, but it is interesting and coincides with the list of free agents we brought in during that time.  My argument:  It is possible that whatever Smith contributed to this team could be a result of bullying others into more diminished roles--Smith called it competition, and in fairness, he was the hardest practicing player I ever watched at OTAs over the years.  But it seems he was Napoleonic in his approach to teammates, possibly damaging the unit and keeping young players from developing--transitioning from college to the pros must be intimidating--especially when an established player is constantly attacking (challenging, to Smith) you as you are trying to learn the plays and culture.  It was so bad when I saw him doing it to Jarrett, it pissed me off.  I think Jarrett was pretty slow and was unsure of the plays etc--it was his rookie OTAs.  This is not proof, just an interesting possibility.  If you have ever had someone at your place of employment with some authority start harassing you, you might understand how a 21-year old kid might feel.
