Predict the "Rooney" interview

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

interviewing Meeks with him having little chance of getting the job defeats the purpose imo.

No it doesn't. It fulfills the requirement. The requirement is just politically correct bullshit. It's dumb. I guarantee you no minority candidate has ever gotten a job due to it. Either you're a candidate or you're not. You don't get an interview simply because you fulfill the requirement and then end up with the job. Qualified candidates franchises would be interested in would be interviewed Rooney Rule or no Rooney Rule.

Actually, the Steelers claim that the Rooney Rule got them the interview with Tomlin, who they never really seriously considered. He blew them away in his interview.

I'd like to see Meek and Skip get the interview. I disagree with the whole idea of the Rooney rule for the simple fact that it's not fair to the coach to have to go through a song and dance for a job that in most cases they aren't going to get. Its patronizing and its ass backwards that it's 2010 and it still takes a mandatory rule to even give good coaches a interview for a head coaching gig.

If you believe Russ Grimm, he had the job but the NFL stepped in and said "Hey wouldn't it be nice if the team that originated the Rooney Rule hired a black coach?"

(no idea if it's true or not)

by Rivera being a candidate, he makes the most since. interviewing Meeks with him having little chance of getting the job defeats the purpose imo.

It looks good on the resume'.

As to the possibilities, I'd break it down as follows...

Legitimate Candidates:

- Ron Rivera

- Perry Fewell

- Winston Moss

- Ray Horton

- Todd Bowles

Formality Only:

- Ron Meeks

- Jim Skipper

Dual Purpose:

(as in "Hey, if we don't offer you the head coaching job, would you like to be the defensive coordinator?")

- Brian Baker

- Ron Rivera

(Moss, Horton and Bowles could conceivably fit here too)
