Fox' win percentage compared to present/past coaches...

I posted this in a dying thread, so I thought it deserved its own...

"Fox's overall record of 73-71 (.510 win percentage) is also pretty bad when you compare it to other coaches within the same range of win percentage (.500's).

Out of all the NFL coaches in history in the .500's range in win percentage, here are the other coaches that have 5 or less more wins than losses (They also have a better win percentage than Fox) Range is .516-.526:

Brad Childress (.526)

Mike Holovak

Jim Fassel

Art Shell

Ron Meyer

Steve Mariucci

Bum Phillips

Jack Del Rio (.516)

These are the coaches in the .500 range that are below Fox. Range: .500-.508:

Ken Whisenhunt (.508)

John Ralston

Weeb Ewbank

Wally Lemm

Buddy Ryan

Charlie Winner

Pete Carroll

Red Hickey (.500)

That list reeks of mediocrity.

Notables within the .500 range that have a better win percentage than Fox and also more than 5 wins than losses. Range is .540 - .594 :

Jon Gruden (.540)

Jim Mora

Dennis Green

Jeff Fisher

Tom Coughlin

Brian Billick

Lovie Smith

Wade Phillips

Mike Shanahan

Mike Sherman (.594)

Here are the most successful coaches in the .500 range. Range is .556-.575. However, besides Jimmy Johnson, they have coached way more games than Fox which is why they're in the .500 win percentage range yet still have a higher percentage which just shows how great they are:

Jimmy Johnson (coached 2 more games than Fox - .556 win percentage)

Mike Ditka (216 games coached)

Marv Levy (255 games coached)

Chuck Noll (342 games coached)

Bill Parcells (303 games coached)

Hank Stram (238 games coached - .575 win percentage)"

I think what this suggests is that we held on to Fox for a little too long. He'll still get a nice job somewhere else though, I imagine, or he'll take a year off and jump back in to head coaching in 2012.

I guess DC isn't out of the question, but why bother?

Im thinking more of DC too. This is more for those that say he'll get a HC job as soon as the offseason begins.

GMs won't look at that type of info when evaluating potential head coaches. They will see what the coaches philosophy is, what they can do with the pieces the team already has, how that meshes with the FO in place, what the coach has gotten from players in the past, etc.

W/L is overrated

So basically it's like dating a friends ex-gf. Your friend told you she was bat poo crazy. But you are sure he was the problem.

It's not black and white. You have to see what your friend/her ex bf brought to the table. Was he batshit crazy? Did he live in his parents basement? Was he fairly rich when they started dating but in the last year of their relationship his dad took away his credit cards and trust fund and they couldn't afford to go on dates anymore, thus he had to make her Ramon Noodles and watch reruns of I Love Lucy for entertainment?

There is a lot to consider, in the end she could be batshit crazy, or he could be. Maybe it was just best that they both go their separate ways.

If I'm doing the math correctly his win percentage prior to this season was closer to .550. I'm no Fox apologist, and I'm certainly not trying to insinuate that this season doesn't count, but to lump him in with the likes of Wally Lemm (who?) seems a little silly.

the hell is the purpose of this? you spent a lot of time posting that .510 isn't as good as .56. Thanks for that.

If you read it you'll see that Coaches that have 5 or less more wins than losses overall lasted just as long or a little bit less than Fox and wasn't hired as a HC as soon as their last stint was over with. All those coaches, besides Childress, coached within 100-150 games (Bum Phillips with about 15 more than Fox - Fox has coached 143). Also look at the names of those same coaches that have a higher win percentage with 5 or less more wins than losses. Brad Childress? Jim Fassell? Art Shell? Steve Mariucci? Jack Del Rio? Those guys were considered as terrible coaches after they were gone (Del Rio is going to be gone soon), yet had a better percentage. What makes people think Fox is going to have a better chance at finding a HC job the next offseason with a worse percentage?

Most of the coaches in the whole list overall, minus the last 6 coaches mentioned, either were recently fired or on their way out right now or were considered mediocre through out their coaching tenure. And Wade Phillips has coached exactly the same amount as Fox and has a higher win percentage. If anything, that should tell you something. People just have to accept that this is the group Fox is in. It is going to be very hard for him to find a head coaching job any time soon if he even does at all.

You can't really go off of past coaches here, different situation... His roster was gutted and he didn't have his players...other coaches get the players they want...he didn't, he was in a lame duck situation with a sorry roster...tbh

I bet other GM's are going to off of everything but this season...which puts him ahead of Gruden in the percentage column.

And Fox' excuse for last year and the Arizona playoff game was???....

Sorry not buying any excuses for him. Just like there shouldn't be any excuses for the other coaches that have been listed.

I really hope JR/Hurney pick a good coach. Fox is easily the best coach we've had. I really hope we're on the up and up and we find somebody better.

Back when we sucked a lot I was a child and didn't seriously follow the panthers until that time Beuerlein was putting up crazy numbers and we got close the playoffs. Then 1-15 happened and I turned off again mostly not with the team but watching the games. I still read about them out of curiousity. Even then those times were a lot worse than 02 to now.

I hope times get better and not worse.

This was a crap season and most GM's and what not are playing Richardson and Hurney for this mess and not Fox...thats just how it is..
