Assistant coach hires on the way...

Mr. Scot

I wonder how Nguyen would do, I was neutral on him when he was a Cowboy, but who knows who he would do as a coach.

Personally, I really don't want to know who he is doing...

:skep:

I'd like to see us give him a shot as LB coach though. Outstanding player, quiet and got the job done without a lot of fanfare. Sounds like a good fit here in Carolina.

well, it's not like he's in the process. I'm certain it was just something to say.

Definitely would like at least one of the top guys on board this weekend, at the least. Still believe the DL coach hire is the most important, contrary to traditional thought.

I don't actually fault him. I'm sure some info he received had indicated things would be done shortly. The process may just be taking longer than expected.

Gantt had said the DC hire would be quick. Yasinskas said it would be slow. It happened, if I recall, about two days after they each made their predictions.

I know it might be just my living around NYC that I expect a little more media coverage, but good lord the local Panthers coverage sucks ass.

Sometimes it actually does look like the local media really doesn't appreciate the Panthers or like them.

I almost get a jealous feeling or something.

it isn't the local media's fault. the panthers org is very tight lipped about everything...JR, hurney, fox....all of them are great about keeping everything quiet and they don't let people in who can't keep their mouths shut.

it isn't so much to keep the fans out of the loop as it is to keep their competitors out of the loop (which is more important that they do).

you get used to it. media asks a question and they will either tell you they aren't going to say anything or run you around in circles.

True, but I think they've amped it up a bit lately, maybe due to being stung by some of what's happened.

The search that brought in Jeff Davidson a few years ago was largely an open book. We knew who the candidates were, got updates on how their interviews went, had plenty of fodder to discuss, the whole deal.

This time, no such luck.

I understand why they do it, but I think it's a mistake. You've got a fanbase that was demoralized by a nasty playoff loss. Why not give them something to get excited about?

You think we're the only organization that likes to be secretive? Jets try to keep quiet, Giants try to keep quiet, only a select few are "out in the open" teams like Dallas.

It doesn't matter about that, the difference is the markets covering it, and when you've got so many different newspapers that get printed every day and probably a lot more in house sources than we do, stuff is going to get printed.

It's not just "competitive confidentiality" like what you're saying. They don't really get players' ears much and interview them. A lot of their articles are just speculative jargon with no quotes. I just saw a story in the paper talking about Brandon Jacobs saying how they would've been in the superbowl if Plaxico had stayed straight and played all the games. What's so competitive about that? They're not even playing.

Let me tell you for all the people that say "oh the media tries to meddle too much" well you've obviously not looked around the league at how competitive the media gets elsewhere. New York would not tolerate Foxspeak. New York would pick apart everything he says in an interview.

that was essentially driven by McCoy's agent, and there's no doubt there was a relationship between that agent and Pat Yasinskas.

they may pick it apart but they wouldn't get anywhere. it wouldn't matter if they didn't tolerate it either. they still wouldn't get anywhere.

i really don't think they let the players in on a lot of things either.

no one has to like what they do. if that is how they do business, i respect it.

reasons for keeping secret about who they are looking at could be as much for the prospects as for the organization.

I remember several years ago UNC went after Frank Beamer as head football coach. Very inside sources said it was a done deal and the announcement was imminent. However, the athletic director was excited and let the news get out the day before. Beamer got so upset by this he backed out and we ended up with several years of mediocrity once again. Loose lips sink ships on football teams too...

I remember telling someone at the time that all the "hot young coach" 02an+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++444 and "other teams want him bad" talk was coming from McCoy's agent but they didn't believe me./

Yasinskas had McCoy [practically moved in to the office. We knew from other guys that Ken Zampese and Jim Skipper were interviewing, and then as a side note some guy named Jeff Davidson.

Similar thing happened with Dave McGinnis and the Bears.

By the way, my prior post in this thread was brought to you in part by the soon to be released action movie "Bird on a Keyboard"

yep. And right at first, of course, people thought it was going to be Fassel.

FWIW, I'd have chosen Zampese, then Shurmur, but I don't think the WCO ideals would've worked here as much, and I wasn't in meetings. I think having McCoy out is the next step in moving forward, and have no idea how he got to be so esteemed. I also wouldn't have moved Magazu up but that's obviously worked out well, and certainly reading up more on Davidson before/during the hire showed him to be top quality.

But definitely, we wouldn't have known half of what was going on without a chatty agent and an inside candidate.
