Assistant coach hires on the way...

Run FAR, FAR away from wanting Stewart to be DB coach. His leaving to be Wade's DC was a blessing.

Bill Bradley, Stewart's successor in SD (I think) is still available. I think he's worth a shot, as some of the 08 regression could be due to other factors on the D. I think Gill Byrd is floating around unemployed as well, and he did an alright job for the Shams.

I thought I remembered you having a negative opinion on Stewart. Glad you popped in.

What was the main issue with him?

General languishing of the secondary while he was here.

When Bradley came, Jammer seemed to get it a lot more, Cromartie blew up. Then this season, Weddle's made the leap and Cason made more of a splash his rookie year than Cro did back in 06. When Stewart left, most of the fans wanted the whole DBs gone with him. Promising starts by Kiel and Florence became one regression after another under Stewart.

Bradley's only failure was getting a 2nd safety to pair with Weddle (I'm hoping the light comes on for Paul Oliver in 09).

Lynn is more likely given the Fox connection. Maxie has the Panther connection but wasn't here under Fox.

Marcin's status is unclear. It wasn't dead set that the Jets were keeping him. He was demoted in favor of Bryan Cox (the old bird flipping Dolphin) and I believe that gives him the latitude for a promotion.

McGinnis is just my hope since so far he hasn't gotten a DC job anywhere. I'd forgotten Venturi but would be okay with him.

I've been meaning to look back for some of Ron Meeks' prior coaching connections but haven't had time.

well, hope or not McGinnis isn't going to make a lateral move. He's assistant head coach of a team that was very close to greatness, he's not going to move to just be a linebackers coach.

The other Indy coaches are all off limits. A few were on staff before Dungy.

It would be nice if they would at least let the media know who is interviewing for the open jobs. Hell, as far as I know, Meeks is the only one they ever talked to about the DC job.

Did they even announce that we were looking at Meeks before we hired him?

Do we even know who else they looked at if any?

Sometimes the lack of information about the team really does suck.

It sure would add a bunch to the conversations here to know at least the relative possibilities.

the team never mentioned any interest in any coach. Meeks, Haslett, McGinnis came up from media mention.

At any rate, in the player free agent world there's a ton of agent-influenced media mention, whispers, rumors. In the assistant coach world, there's really not much to be gained from it. So you don't hear much about teams interviewing this guy or that guy, though the Bucs seem to be unable to quiet the press specifically, and same for the Raiders.

I'd say that teams in general would rather it stay fairly quiet. But, it'd be nice to have something in place either way - with three position coach openings left (and hopefully an offensive quality control and/or assistant OL coach type hire coming, but not expecting it). My names, save for Board, Edwards, and possibly Haluchak, are still out there, but that was my first string, really.

I know it might be just my living around NYC that I expect a little more media coverage, but good lord the local Panthers coverage sucks ass.

Sometimes it actually does look like the local media really doesn't appreciate the Panthers or like them.

I almost get a jealous feeling or something.
