I am, due to unfortunate circumstances, in the market to purchase a used vehicle...

Friend of mine did it twice. Seems to have gotten good deals both times. The second time was a real hassle though because of the difference in New Jersey and North Carolina laws regarding insurance and registration. I don't know the details of it though.

I have looked at several handicapped vans on eBay, but never bought one. It's such a niche market. But there are some great prices on the vans.

I once let my wife convince me to drive to Yonkers/New Rochelle, NY to possibly buy a vehicle she found online...

Worst trip of my life... I think I documented it here on the Huddle, not sure if it survived the crash...

Buddy of mine has bought multiple vehicles online, and we sold a G35 via Craigslist...

The worst part is always the title work and actually working it all out on paper...

Hmmm.. Thanks everybody. Does anyone know if you have to pay taxes if it is being bought/sold between 2 states?

Probably no taxes until you go to the DMV and get the tag.

:yesnod: I went to register my Mother's car tht she left me. I had called the DMV and they had said that there was no taxes due to an inheritance. When I got there, they changed me tax! I tried to explain that I had talked with so&so and they had said no taxes due to inheritance. The DMV lady said they were wrong and I had to pay over $100 to get the license plate and change of title. (The reason I called in advance is, that they used not to take a check, only cash!) I didn't have the cash on me. (Hence the reason I called, or I would have had it!)

I had to get out of line, that I had waited on forever! Go find an ATM machine, get the cash. Come back and wait in line forever, just to get the plate and title change!

Of course I had driven the car on Indiana plates for like 5 months. The Indiana plates were due to expire. That's why I figured it was time to register the car here in NC.

I know a guy who bought an Acura MDX off Ebay. He had to drive 8 hours to pick it up from a dealer, but has been very happy with the results.

Just like with anything else, you need to do you research. A lot of flooded/salvaged vehicles are sold on eBay, so be careful

1) Check carfax

2) Try to buy in state, the cross state deals are a lot of times shady

3) Go look at the car first
