What if...

Coaches with better resumes than Fox haven't been able to find HC gigs right away.....some never again.

I'd be shocked if he got a HC gig in 2011. Fox is best suited to be a DC. More people than just Carolian fans realize this guy shouldn't have his finger on an offense.

Who are you talking about specifically? Not sure who's got a better resume than Fox that has struggled to find a job recently.

I don't necessarily disagree with your last part, but someone will hire him. There are going to be a lot of vacancies this year and a lot of the guys getting fired are not going to get new HC jobs (Singletary).

I think Fox could eventually get a new HC gig....I just see him going back to being a DC which is where he belongs.

In 6 years, guys like Mike Martz went 53-32 as a HC....and even achieved back to back winning seasons w/ a Superbowl appearance. What has he been doing the past few years? that is just one of the top of my head. I also think smart franchises are getting away from the recycled HCs......there is reason Atlanta is going forward and teams like Washington aren't going anywhere. If Fox was really a great coach Carolian wouldn't be letting him walk.

Mike Martz, Bill Callahan, and Jim Fassel never found head coaching gigs after departing teams they took to a superbowl loss, which is as far as Fox has ever taken the Panthers. Plus Fox's coaching record here is eerily similar to Fassel's with the Giants, and that's the same guy he coordinated defense under so...

All valid points. I just think a lot of GMs may overlook this year somewhat and give the guy a good look, for better or worse. He does have a decent resume if you throw out this year. And as I said, there are going to be a lot of vacancies so he'll definitely have a variety of opportunities.

and I agree, I think if you look at Fox he probably has a * next to this year. Regardless, if he was a great HC Carolina wouldn't be letting him walk and what kind of team is looking for something less than a great HC. Fox realistically had his walking papers before this seaosn hit his resue

Sometimes teams do make questionable hires though. I know Singletary started out as an interim coach, but what type of resume did he have to get the job full time? Yeah he went 5-4, but aside from that he really had done nothing to deserve that job.

I do think he'd make a heck of a DC again, but I'm not sure he'd go that route. I think it's more likely he'd take a year off instead of taking a coordinator job. I don't know how many former HCs jump right back into the game the next year as a coordinator. If he can't find a job the following year then I can see him resigning himself to having to work his way up the ladder again.

John Fox gets a gig as defensive coordinator next season with his buddy Sean Payton?

this OP is assuming a lot

that either Sean Payton or Gregg Williams won't be coaching in New Orleans next year, and barring a catastrophic meltdown of historic proportions that won't happen.

Williams has improved the Saints defense to be a top ten unit this year, and his defensive approach has been coming along for them really well.

As for where Fox ends up I think it's most likely he takes a DC job somewhere else but if a lot more HC jobs become available at the end of the season, naturally that increases his probability of HCing elsewhere. Also, until this year Fox pretty much ran roughshod over the organization. Being on the same page with Hurney they probably seldom disagreed about personnel decisions and whatnot so he probably got his way like 95% of the time, and I think it's highly unlikely Fox finds that kind of GM/HC professional relationship anywhere else. So you also have to consider not only how appealing he is to teams, but also how appealing a team looks to him. Which is why I think it's easier he can just find a DC gig because that might be less of a hassle for him.

For him to be a HC you pretty much need a GM that wants a "back to basics" meat and potatoes run the ball, stop the run guy and he'll already have competition in Russ Grimm for a job offering like that. I don't think a GM that wants to play west coast offense will be particularly appealing to him.

If John Fox somehow ends up working for Sean Payton...

then Fox can continue to suck Payton's dick like he's done every since he took the job in New Orleans.

They must have a little 69 action going on. The bro love is thick between those two. If foxy ends up in NO that will make an EPIC rivalry in the NFCS. And if clausen remains the QB, Foxy will be bustin at the sides with laughter everytime he squishy face trots onto the field.

I don't see fox having a problem getting an HC gig next season. Coaches respect the hell out of him, analysts respect the hell out of him and think its our loss that he's leaving, and the players, despite a horendous season, are still busting their asses for him every game. Thats a good start to any resume, I think. With enough quality personnel and the support of the head shed he can be a winner. I think he's getting reunited with delhomme and riding the hillis train as far as it will go.
