Building a winner in one off season: A perspective

OFFENSE

OFFENSIVE LINE

Gross LT

Wharton, Bernadeau LG

Kalil C

Schwartz, RG

Otah, RT

NEEDS: (3) Starting RG to complete with Schwartz, Depth at Center and LOT

Re-sign Kalil, sign a RG UFA, draft depth at LOT and C

TIGHT ENDS

King

Rosario

Barnidge

NEEDS: (0) Get something out of this group. Barnidge will play bigger role when Davidson is gone.

RUNNING BACKS

Williams

Stewart

Goodson

Sutton

Fiametta

NEEDS: (0)

WIDE RECEIVER

Smith

Gettis

Lafell

Martin

Edwards

NEEDS: (1) #1 WR. I think Gettis and Lafell will be so much better with a good QB, but we need a true #1 eventually. Will Smith be back? I say he will, but who knows. If Luck stays in school and Smith Leaves, look for AJ Green to be the #1 pick. If Smith leaves and we draft Luck, expect a free agent WR, something Hurney sucks at finding.

QUARTERBACK

Clausen

Pike

Needs: (2) I don't see a new coach keeping Pike as the #3 until he develops more. #3 will be Clausen's spot. We will draft Luck and possibly sign a veteran. Don't be surprised if that veteran is Matt Moore. There are not many of them available.

DEFENSE

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Landri

Nesbett (maybe)

NEEDS: (2-3) a DT in the third round and a free agent.

DEFENSIVE END

Johnson

Hardy

Brown

Brayton

NEEDS: (0) Keep Brian Baker

LINEBACKER

Beason

Anderson

Davis

Connor

J. Williams

J. Williams

NEEDS: (0) We are loaded if TD checks out and we stay healthy

CORNERBACK

Gamble

Munnerlyn

McClain

NEEDS: (1) Marshall is not going to be re-signed, not until after he shops around and realizes he is worth slightly more than the league minimum. We could sign a free agent, but I am sure we will draft one around the fourth round. IF we can play Hudson and Pugh at nickle and dime, the pressure to get a top caliber CB is reduced. McClain sucked vs. Pittsburgh, but he is a rookie CB and was targeted as a starter. He will get better.

SAFETY

Godfrey

Martin

Pugh

Hudson

NEEDS: (0) We are solid at S.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kasay

Baker

Lloyd

NEEDS (2) Possibly, KASAY could become expendible if his age and the fact that we don't want 2 Kickers becomes a factor with the new coach. Secondly, did anyone notice how baker has struggled? If the playoffs were in the picture, this would be a concern.

SUMMARY:

OFFENSE: WE NEED 2 or 3 OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, A WR (possibly), AND 2 QBs.

DEFENSE: WE NEED 2 DTs, a CB

SPECIAL TEAMS: WE MIGHT NEED A Kicker

FREE AGENT LIST

Right Guard

Quarterback

Defensive Tackle

Wide Receiver

DRAFT BY POSITION and ROUND

1. Quarterback-- LUCK only.

3. Defensive Tackle

3 (Comp Pick for Peppers) Cornerback

4. Offensive Left Tackle

5. Center

6. Kicker

This is how I would approach it. Have at it.

We have about 7 starters that are free agents. We wont get them all back.

I know, however, that is too tough to project. I let Marshall go. However, the roster spots and salaries would go with them, so we will have to sign more free agents if we don't get them back.

After the new HC is named, there will be 2 things that will determine alot of the "who does what and what do we draft". The OC and DC - these names will give you some insight into the direction the team will take with each squad - then you'll have a better vision of all the "who's and how's".

and............ that minute can't get here soon enough!

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
