We need new STARTERS on the O-line...

...not just health or depth. No one's job on the O-line should be safe. Especially if we're all gonna complain about how the O-line needs to be fixed asap.

I'm sorry, but I'm not comfortable with

LT - Gross

LG - Wharton

C - Kalil

RG - (New Starter)

RT - Otah

1.) Sign FA starter at T AND G. I don't want just a new starter at RG, I want someone to possibly replace Gross and Otah as well.

2.) We should also try to pick up an OL in the 1st day of the draft. (3rd Round seems the most plausible)

Main point is that we should have at least 2 new starters on the line next year.

My suggestion - I would re-sign Kalil, keep Wharton...sign someone like Jared Gaither long-term to start at LT or RT (preferably LT). Pick up a guard like Davin Joseph or draft one.

Thoughts...

I agree 100%! Nobody job on Offense should be safe, for that matter.

Kind of depends on what we will be going next year. What's our philosophy going to be? Are we going to get a QB in the draft? If so which one? Are we going to be more balanced (ie more like Atlanta) , pass heavy but will run if you let us like NO, heavy run play action (Baltimore), etc. If we stay run heavy I would probably stick with the current line (ie with more depth). I wouldn't be comfortable signing any FA until we are sure what our direction is going to be for the next few years. That will be based off the coach.

That exact O-line plus Vincent was one of the best in the league in '08 and was pretty darn good last season too. Kalil is top notch. Wharton is good and deserves to start. Otah, when healthy, is top notch and I'm sure he'll be back to his old bull dozing ways next season. Gross underachieved big time this year, but he's still a good LT and, let's be honest, good LT's are a rare thing. I think their piss poor performance this year had a lot to do with chemistry issues, injuries and a lot of no one giving a sh*t about this season. We need a RG badly, but we also need a good RT to back up Otah and a young LT to develop under Gross. One new starter will be sufficient.

I was actually about to put something similar into my dream roster that I'm not quite done with yet.

The reality is that both Gross and Otah are 1st rounders with some pretty decent sized contracts. So to have one of them on the bench is an inefficient use of resources. So you either trade them which would significantly weaken us without being able to recoup immediately most likely.

I would draft an OT with our 3rd rounder and sign a vet like Alan Faneca to fill in at guard.

It makes sense since Russ Grimm could possibly be our coach. Faneca wouldn't be as much as a guy like Nicks but he would be consistent and not cost all that much. We could probably get him on a 1-2 year deal.

Schwartz has been comfortably our most consistent OLineman in the run game and has given up just 3 sacks, 6 hits and 11 pressures all season. Kalil has been the only player who has a better record in the pass game (4 sacks, 1 hit, 9 pressures) although has been man handled a bit more than Geoff has.

We don;t need a new RG. Schwartz has been terrific this season, being our best player at getting to the second level for the run game.

You are buying a name only with Faneca, the guy hasn't played a decent level for years...

You are ignoring that our current line of Gross, Mack, Kalil, Schwartz, Williams. Our starting lineup of the season was missing two from 08 as well... So it's not the exact line minus Vincent and never has been.

Schwartz is a genuine starter in this league and people are just guessing at why there the line has been less than stellar when they blame him. The ONLY thing we struggle with across the line is experience. Our blitz pickups (which stems from the inexperience at C & QB calling the protections) are exposed when teams do delayed blitzes, stunts and overloads. One on one we are still very dominant.

Wharton was poor this year and average last year, where only in '08 did he play at a high standard (although not as high as people think).

We have legit starters this year in Gross, Kalil & Schwartz. Otah & Wharton have been in the past. Mack has been exposed badly these last few games and is looking more and more like a mediocre back up. Williams does not belong in the league... All we need is depth and experience across the line. I would be happy with Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Schwartz, Otah starting next year, but we need genuine depth at either RG or RT, because if Otah continues to struggle with his health Schwartz will kick out wide again.

this is always the line's problem. it never gets settled and chemistry is never established.

with the exception of otah at the rt spot over williams, leave the line the way it is now going into next season and build depth behind it.

the philosophy of the team is not going to change even if the world beater andrew luck is put under center. it's going to remain run heavy.

people don't like bernardeau, but the run game did nothing but improve when wharton went down.

the line has always been suspect with pass protection, but if it's built to do one thing it's going to suffer in another...especially if chemistry is never developed.

Good points. We do need chemistry and Wharton's departure allowed the run game to develop. However Wharton was pretty damn good in the pass game, something which Mack is not. Bernadeau tends to struggle in both areas and we can't rely on him to be starter...

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
