Universal whine about Clausen thread

Drafting Luck doesn't even mean we're "bailing" on Clausen. I honestly don't think anyone within this organization ever thought he was the real future of the franchise. He was simply the best value pick available and it was a position of need for us. We don't have all that much invested in him. I certainly don't say that the Panthers ever laid their future on the line for Clausen. It was just a smart pick for the position we were in.

We never expected to be picking #1 overall though and with a talent like Luck you just can't pass it up. We would be complete dolts to not draft Luck.

i actually do think they believed he was the future franchise QB or that he seriously could be. i was the same way. after the initial minor meltdown that lasted all of about 2 minutes i actually got to thinking about his potential and started doing research on him and thought that maybe they were on to something. it was a low risk/high reward type gamble that i thought was worth a shot. so it didn't pay off in getting us a legit QB that this team could build around and win with. big deal. move on to the next one.

drafting a QB with our first pick next year will be a much bigger risk and will for sure demand that we invest a lot more in all facets than we have with clausen. doesn't matter if it's luck or newton....it will force us to focus a lot more on getting him the talent, coaching, and time/patience he needs. it's a huge risk, but if you want to become a dominant team in the new/current NFL, it's the kind of risk you have to take.

Let Clausen mature here--if he can beat out pike as the third QB. Bring in Harbaugh and Luck, and maybe their magic rubs off on Clausen. His contract is incentive laden. The fact that Moore sucked this season after experiencing success suggests that it could be the system/climate. Clausen needs to wait, watch, learn as the #3 QB for a year or two.

We need a veteran to start next season. Seeing how bleak the market is, I would consider looking hard at Matt Moore instead of brining in someone with a similar resume. I think he was set up to fail this season. He is not bad when the line is blocking and he has some options to throw to.

you know, this might be the best thing for us.

let clausen sit around with a better coaching staff for a couple years and give him a chance to play every once in a while. maybe some team might be willing to give up something worthwhile for him. the tough thing is if we draft luck or newton, we will more than likely be handing the keys over right away. most teams say they have no intention of doing that and that they would prefer to have them sit for a year or two, but something always happens that "forces" them to get the rookie going. barring any injury that takes the new QB out for a couple weeks, no one is really going to have a chance to see if clausen got better.

it might be good for clausen's development to have him sit and learn and mature, but it will be hard to sell any improvement without giving him play time. i'd rather get back to winning and get on with the new QB than sit and watch clausen and hope that he gets better so he'd have some value. not really an easy solution.

Interesting comparisons:

Colt McCoy week 5 vs steelers

23/33 281 1 2

Pickles

10/23 72 0 1

Not excusing Pickles play, but Browns have one of the greatest Left Tackles ever to play in the NFL by the name of Joe Thomas. Their O-line is way, way better than our shitty line.

They also have the White Buffalo, Peyton Hillis, playing RB.

The QB Guru Extradinaire, Mike Holmgren is their GM.

Upgrade indeed. It's hard to know what the new coach will do. It apears that JR thinks he may not need a coach until 2012. I am excited to see who it is and what his(or her) plan will be. I guess I'd finish the Clausen is... with gone I hope.

anyway. we'll be getting a new coach soon after this season is over. there is no indication anywhere that richardson is going to sit around and wait until next year to make a decision.

agreed that upgrade is needed, though.

there are many on this board who talk a big game about knowing football and thought drafting clausen was smart or a steal because of where the panthers got him.

dude is a more immature midwest version of david carr

I know you're referring to colleges, but they are basically the same guy - playing wise. Plus, both are Cali guys. But, I have to admit, Carr seems to be a much better person.

I have been ripping Jimmy myself, but I was very objective in my approach to him to start with and hoped he could be "the guy" for us, but once I saw him play, I knew the chances were slim.

I'm glad we played on a national stage last night for all the irrational people we have on this board who refuse to believe he won't turn into a franchise QB. He just isn't and hasn't shown any signs that he will. Zero improvement. And now all the talking heads saw it as well, difference is that these guys actually played the game and are seeing and saying the same things that I, and others have been saying since forever now...

And again, he was a 2nd rounder, so I don't understand the attachment... We're gonna be alright come April.

so if Luck comes out, we take him, and then he struggles (like he will), should we cut or trade him after one year? No, you do not give up on a rookie after one year, especially with the team Clausen has around him

We aren't giving up on Clausen. But he is basically done as an NFL QB. His only chance is to be a backup for a year and then give it another shot when the time comes. It would be a miracle if he excelled.

For all intents the Clausen era is over.

He has flaws that are unlikely to be fixed.

Call that giving up if you like.

I would call that giving up...Clausen does have his flaws, but a lot of those flaws are magnified by the fact that he has no time to throw, along with receivers that apparently cannot catch. However, I do not think you can judge a rookie after one year, cause if that was the case Elway and Aikman wouldve been kicked to the curb. Their stats were dreadful as well, dont forget that...so regardless, if Luck declares (which I dont think he will), then he is going to struggle with a dreadful o-line and a mediocre receiver group, I just dont get why people think he is going to work a miracle with the current group of players

Everyone assumes Luck will come out. He may be thinking no way I can live going to the Panthers. Either way we could still get Luck next year if not this year. I dont think the Panthers are going to go from 1-15 to playoff material.

Clausen doesnt seem to have the "it" factor. His mechanics look awful. Wish Pike could have played some so both could have gotten experience. If luck does not come out we have to get help on OL or DL. I would sign a veteran qb to either start or lead these guys along.

Have you not been watching games this season. There have been times where Clausen has had 5 or more seconds in the pocket and he still scrambles around afraid to get hit and either A: throws the ball 4 rows into the stands B: lays down for a sack or C:scrambles for a gain of 3 on third and twelve..... The guy is terrible, you're completely off base comparing Elway and Aikman to Clausen. Yes their stats were terrible but they showed improvements and signs that they were getting "it" throughout the season. Clausen hasn't done anything of the sort. Keep believing in Clausen all you want and thinking he will turn into a great QB. You're only fooling yourself.....

Panthers definitely need to bring in a veteran QB to help the young guys along...Clausen and Pike both need a veteran to help them develop....also, Carolina needs to bring in a good O-Coordinator and QB coach that can help the young guys develop. Trade down this year, pick up AJ Green or a top notch DT, then use the 2nd round pick that wed get if we trade down to address other needs...Carolina needs a lot more than a QB, including someone to teach the QBs we have

    • Man whether it's the Panthers or the Hornets it's crazy how many foolish talking heads there are in the local media. I just unsubscribed from locked on Hornets. Doug Branson with his cheesy mustache is an absolute clown especially when his partner isn't on. Talking about trading LaMelo because he can't win basketball games by himself with no semblance whatsoever of a legitimate Center. These YouTube personalities will say anything for a damn click.
    • I’m hoping for that exact same scenario, two seconds would be big for us. I’d hope for 3 impact players. A WR/DL/DE that can contribute like this current class would be key to our rebuild.
    • When I look at what I can find, a carryover problem from last season is our receivers are still unable to get enough separation on a consistent basis. Canales is certainly better at scheming them open, like how he sneaked out Thielen for a big play. But then he's also having Thielen running routes he frankly shouldn't be doing anymore. I feel part of the RZ issues is not really having anyone - after trading Diontae - who can make those quick cuts on a short field to give whoever is under center a wider window to throw. We also only have one guy with blazing speed in Thompkins and from what I could see, he's really used more to draw away coverage. I bring this all up because what Canales needs for sustained success - other than QB - is the other receiver pieces we'll be getting in the offseason.  Otherwise, I have to say that Canales isn't as afraid to be aggressive offensively. As others mentioned, still doesn't run the ball enough at times. Finally, I still feel his playcalls still doesn't line up with his mantra of getting rid of the ball within x amount of seconds. Maybe I count too slow. Oh, and I'm glad Canales first game after a bye looked good. I feared he'd be like Ron Rivera where we would fall flat on our faces.
