Tons of Bobcats Updates (Including Trade Rumors and New Coaches)

One of the biggest challenges seemingly facing Paul Silas as the Charlotte Bobcats’ new interim coach is building a constructive relationship with guard Stephen Jackson. Silas, naturally, doesn’t think that will be much of a problem. “Jack is a leader and if he is leading in the right way than it’s all going to work itself out,” Silas told Yahoo! Sports. “His grandmother, if you can believe this, told him we’re cousins, we’re related. So we call each other ‘Cuz.’ “Listen, Jack is who is he is. I just don’t think I’m going to have that much of a problem with Jack.”

In the spirit of the season, all of the above added up to an excommunication, though the uninformedinsist Brown resigned and forfeited $8 million. "Trust me, Larry did not quit," testifies someone in the proverbial room.

Interim Paul Silas is being permitted to assemble his own aides, as long as he hires Jordan's partners in pleasure and punishment. Charles Oakley already is on board. Wide World Wes and cherished au pair re Ahmad Rashard can't be far behind.

Having spent some time around Brown since watching him play high-school ball against Artie Heyman (Long Beach vs. Oceanside), he always has a job on tap. I've got a pesky hunch his ancient agent Joe Glass began calling around the league about possible jobs the day after his client signed with the Bobcats.

League sources told FanHouse that the Bobcats and Portland have discussed a trade that would send beloved small forward Gerald Wallace to the Blazers with center DeSagana Diop and point guard D.J. Augustin in exchange for center Marcus Camby and point guard Andre Miller. And while the Blazers are exploring a litany of their own options and don't appear eager to do the deal as of now, the discussion that is one of many being had by the Bobcats reveals plenty about the sort of the on-court changes Jordan has in mind for his club.

Some names bandied about in a deal for J.J. Redick have been Indiana’s Jeff Foster or Portland’s Joel Pryzbilla or Charlotte’s Nazr Mohammed or DeSagna Diop.

Jordan is considering a trade proposal that would send Augustin, DeSagana Diop and Matt Carroll to the Los Angeles Clippers for Davis, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

The Clippers have desperately tried to trade Davis and have included him in proposals with center Chris Kaman, league executives told Yahoo! Sports. Brown could’ve never coached Davis, but Silas allows a different freedom for his players. Whatever moves Jordan makes now, he can’t tear these Bobcats apart and start over again. No way can Jordan sell this market on another cost-cutting revamping of the franchise.

The departure of Brown could open the door for the Bobcats to dump more salary in advance of the next CBA. Gerald Wallace, Boris Diaw and Stephen Jackson all have multiple years on their contracts, which could make them difficult to move in this market. One team known to be looking for frontcourt help is the Orlando Magic, but would they be willing to surrender Jason Richardson's expiring deal in a package for power forward Diaw and center DeSagana Diop?

Alvin Gentry: Its sad to see my good friend and mentor Larry Brown out in Charlotte. He is great for basketball and a tremendous teacher. Best of luck.

For all of Michael Jordan’s draft failures as an NBA executive, the Charlotte Bobcats owner had the right idea on that June night in 2008. Stanford’s Brook Lopez had slipped to ninth, and Jordan and his top basketball executives prepared to select him. So sure of the choice, one team official called Lopez’s agents and told them to prepare the 7-footer for the walk to the podium. Michael Jordan had his man. Only, Larry Brown wouldn’t stop his protesting in the draft room. For some reason – who knows, because Brown didn’t scout these players – the coach wanted to take D.J. Augustin, a small point guard over a skilled 7-footer. He didn’t want Raymond Felton, Brown bellowed. Finally, Jordan relented. The Bobcats notified the league they were taking Augustin and left Lopez stunned when the commissioner didn’t call his name.

Higgins was asked Wednesday if Brown's increasingly critical assessments were a factor in the coaching change. Higgins said no players had complained to him about Brown's persona, then added: "That's what coaches do. I'm sure some of it was frustration, and some of it was getting players fired up any way you can."

Several sources in and around the Bobcats say Brown had no idea this was coming. Brown ran practice Wednesday as if he'd be here the rest of this season and the one more remaining on his contract, sources said. He'd been advocating various trades, including one that recently fell through involving co-captain Stephen Jackson.

When Jordan purchased the majority share of the Bobcats, he promised to be visible in the market. He promised to be accessible, to use his stature to sell the franchise in a market that had long ago felt burned and betrayed by the despicable George Shinn and the cheap Robert Johnson. Incompetence reigned forever here, and Jordan ceded more authority to Brown than he had with a coach. They fought over everything, including Brown’s desire over the summer to get out his contract and coach elsewhere.

A league source said that Brown walked away with $8 million severance from Charlotte. Combined with guaranteed monies he received after leaving the Pistons, Knicks and other teams, Brown has been paid well over $25 million for not coaching NBA teams -- an extraordinary income that says as much about his value as it does about his fickleness.

Now, Silas comes back to the bench, and one of the owner’s old buddies, Charles Oakley, is expected to join him, two league sources said. This coaching staff won’t win all of its games, but it won’t lose any fights. On his way out, Brown gave Jordan this advice, a source said: Make sure you hire coaches that are your friends, because it won’t work anyway else with you. Oakley was telling friends on Wednesday that he planned to toughen up that Charlotte frontline, and no doubt that’s what Jordan wants out of him.

Marc Berman: Paul Silas was at the Knicks game in Charlotte earlier this month. Had lost so much weight. This Brown thing must have been brewing.

Chris Tomasson: I talked to Paul Silas a few weeks ago and he said he really wanted the Bobcats job when Michael Jordan instead hired Sam Vincent in 2007.

One of those correspondents, Holly MacKenzie in Toronto, caught up with Prince after Detroit beat the Raptors. McKenzie asked Prince if he was surprised by Brown’s unexpected end in Charlotte. “Yes and no,” Prince said. “I say yes because when things are going tough, Larry usually works through them and tries to make the best out of them. Secondly, I had heard some of his comments the last week or so about the guys not understanding him or listening and might need a new voice in the locker room, those types of things. “It’s definitely unfortunate because he’s one of those coaches where if you really understand, get to understand him and what he’s trying to get accomplished things will work out for the best. It’s been unfortunate for them. [brown] and the rest of that staff is a great staff. He’s been unbelievable in his coaching experience and what he’s taught players around the league and what he’s done for the organizations around the NBA, so it’s definitely surprising.”

Prince knows as well as anyone that Brown’s demanding and unflinching ways can wear on people, even in a relatively short amount of time. Prince, though, said Brown has too much to offer basketball to just walk away. “Whether he wants to get a president, GM job, something like that or keep coaching,” Prince said, “he has to do something because he means so much to the game.”

Interesting.

So I got a few things out of all that.

1. Brown is to blame for not having Lopez.

2. Brown was grinding on peoples nerves and was incredibly stubborn.

3. Not entirely sure about this, but Brown's comment to MJ about "the next coaching staff needs to be your friend because that is the only way it will work with you." seemed like a shot at MJ.

4. Trades are henceforth.

5. Go Bobcats.

Thanks for packaging all this info together, good stuff.

Little Silas is a cool dude. A few summers ago, I was at a nearby YMCA shooting hoops, the only one in the gym, and the Stephen Silas walked in to shoot also, we had a nice chat and told him that I thought his dad would be a great fit to coach this team.

It took time, but it happened.

Do you think you could swing down to New Orleans, and talk to CP3, tell him how awesome CLT will be next year....on your way back, head over to Denver and scoop up Melo.

KTHANX :)

    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
    • There is zero reason to sit him if he is ready to go.  Putting him on a shelf and attempting to protect does him no favors.
    • Stroud us nit the first QB thus franchise has missed on. He also won't be the last.
