Rookie Report - Cardinals Edition

thats great that jimmy clausen did better but its against one of the worst pass defenses in the league.

Cardinals are not the worst pass defence in the NFL, they are bottom half but no where near being the worst. However they are 'feast or famine' thriving on big plays, so Clausen being careful with short passes was a blessing in disguise.

Neblett and Norwood both showed promise in their limited time. They were disruptive in the snaps in which they were in.

Agreed, Neblett has produced in every game he has been in. Bit unsure why they haven't given Norwood more chances. Neblett is credited with 2 pressures with 4 solo tackles of which 4 were defensive stops, in just 75 snaps. Pretty damn good ratio, it would be interesting if he could maintain it.

Interesting that he was better under pressure than not. Suggesting further that he is good at the quick dump, which he did a lot at ND, but not so good at mid-long range passing.

P55 is spot on. He still struggled under pressure and when he was blitzed, with the OLine taking most of the credit for his bigger plays. He got a couple of nice plays when being pressured, but his blitz recognition pre-snap (which is easily coachable) is what is causing so many free sacks on him.

So to recap he was successful on one of the 6 pressure situations throwing a TD to King. On the other five opportunities he was either sacked, ran out of the pocket way short of the first down or threw a pass short of the sticks and one incomplete. So the 131 passer rating is another example of how the stats being presented are meaningless. Even against Arizona he threw for less than 150 yards.

We have the worse passer in the league who has thrown 2 TDs in 8 games versus 7 Ints for the lowest YPA of everyone and a passer rating of 59. Yet to look at these stats he must be talking about someone different than the guy in the Panthers uniform on Sunday. LOL

My only issue with what you said is above. Yes it was against the Cardinals, but he only threw it 19 times, with 13 completions, not many get above 150 yards with that amount of attempts. So don't give him crap because of the plays called.

He does have the lowest YPA and QB Rating, but it doesn't mean the guy can't have a good game? It seems that some just want to eternally bitch and moan about him, whereas he played a solid game on Sunday, no matter how you look at it.

I recall when we won with Delhomme performing worse people claimed that he did enough to win and that was the true definition of a QB...

Who in the f**k did you steal this from without citing?

www.profootballfocus.com - I never know how to display the data and I am careful not to divulge all information as I don't want to piss them off...

To clarify though the comments are my interpretations of the data, so others can easily get other view points.

Someone who can't spell offense?

Lol, good call

Actually I don't have a problem with him only throwing 19 times and completing 13. They are managing the game for him and controlling what he does which is not that different from what they did with Moore in 2007. I am not concerned about the 141 yards either as that was a respectable YPA.Honestly he needs the help right now to take the pressure off him.

My comment about the pressure was more about rating him with a 131 rating based on three passes than about anything else. I was pointing out if we look at the 6 opportunities and evalauting what he did with those, he really converted 1 of them. Otherwise he threw it short, took a sack, or failed to convert on the play. Which in my mind is why they pressure and blitz him so often. More times than not the defense gets rewarded for pressuring him.

So I don't have a problem with Clausen against Arizona, I was one of the few who was rooting for him to do well and for us to win. I just think that QB ratings are best taken in totality and not based on a handful of throws which tends to overexaggerate a good or bad performance. So honestly I tend to think putting too much analysis into a very small sample size tends to overstate the results either positively or negatively.

But I am fine with stats and like to use them as well. The issue is not the numbers but the interpretation.

With all that said I thought he played fine. Sure he made rookie mistakes but he is a rookie so what do you expect??

I actually thought he played well, the gameplan was centered around his abilities. Some interesting plays I noticed.

1) Gross blocking air, while the DE blows by him.

2) Anyone catch Fiametta block on the DE, that sprung J'Stew for a long run?

3) Hudson blitzing and running past Skelton.

4) Hudson while on the sideline, catches a Skelton "throw away" and takes off running like he had intercepeted the pass. LOL!!!

5) Why was CJ Wilson in single coverage on Fitzgerald late in the game?

6) Has anyone really missed Gamble?

He was under pressure on 6 throws. He got sacked 2 times ran for a few yards a third time (not a first down)and threw 3 times. He completed 2 of them- the TD throw to King for 16 yards and another one for 9 yards (short of the first down marker).

So to recap he was successful on one of the 6 pressure situations throwing a TD to King. On the other five opportunities he was either sacked, ran out of the pocket way short of the first down or threw a pass short of the sticks and one incomplete. uhh, Clausen was much improved on sunday, which is all this post really says.

you can dissect his numbers to make them look terrible, but ultimately he had his best game of the year. not saying much, but the fact he won his first game and he threw a TD in it is a good thing. This thread was not made to try to validate keeping him as our starter, it's a weekly project that shows how our rookies are doing, breaking their stats down.

I appreciate the thread and I like the analysis... and agree with it.

edit: just saw your more recent post - I agree that the QB rating while under pressure is a stupid number to use to judge him on, lol. :) I thought you were saying he played terribly on Sunday and that these numbers were just twisting it. Apologies p55!

The 9 yard pass was either (no access to the replays) on 3rd and 5 or 3rd and 10, where we went on to convert the 4th down. So depending on how critical you look at things both possible passes continued our drives. So out of 6 attempts he had 2 offensive success's, was sacked twice on unblocked blitzers, ran once and had a pass fall incomplete. Not terrible, not amazing and pretty much rank average, which is sadly an improvement for his season thus far!!!

You are completely right about the small sample size making QB ratings kind of pointless, might actually leave them off for the Pittsburgh game (if he records a rating...).

I also agree with the fact that the gameplan helped him out this time round (until we hit the 3rd quarter...) and we finally played to some of his strengths. I also enjoyed seeing a couple of passes aimed at Smith down the sideline as they were high percentage positive plays.
