QB Guru on Clausen, Luck, others...

It is funny because other than his hand size I don't remember hearing or reading anything about his throwing motion, etc... I consider Mike Mayock a pretty reliable source and after watching Clausen's pro day he was convinced Clausen was a top 10 prospect heading into the draft, he made the comment that Clausen didn't have elite arm strength like Cutler or Jamarcus Russell, but he had good arm strength, good mechanics, could make all the throws, etc...

On top of that, scouts inc was slurping all over Clausen in their pre-draft scouting report they had him graded at 89 out of 100 and the only real knocks against him was in the area of intangibles, maturity, etc.

I remember the same things. So it floored me when I saw him actually throw the ball in preseason. I couldn't believe that the guy who was reported to have a good throwing motion was sidearming it and throwing it so low with a slinging motion. I wonder what happened??

hey RealDeal, are you lurking some place around here? Did he have this terribad motion growing up or did he look legit?

I mean, I almost feel like he couldn't have had this motion his entire life; it's so terrible you'd think someone would have noticed.

also, his hands aren't huge but are bigger than some huge name NFL qbs (Vick is one), so I don't buy that he has tiny hands and that is why he sucks.

Clausen just can't execute this offense. Maybe he can run a different one in the future ,I dont know, but he clearly isnt cut out for this one...

Even though we're changing offenses, I still want Luck anyway.

I don't even want to run the risk of beating their backups, I want to get blown out so I don't have to spend the next 15 years watching Luck be an elite QB on someone else's team knowing that we missed out on him by a SoS tiebreaker.

i strongly agree, unload jimmy to a WCO and let it ride with Luck, nothing to lose really

Actually if you brought in a scheme similar to what New England runs with our running game, Luck and Clausen would both look much better. Yeah I know it supposed to be similar but no one would mistake what we do for the Patriots at this point.

we arent built for that, you have to have a great slot receiver to run it. Though, if we had a legit #1 and Gettis on the outside I think Steve could be lethal in the slot. Bottom line is JR wants to have an identity like the Steelers so I dont see us doing that, and what O coordinator would even come here with the talent we have??

Since when is Steve Smith not a legit #1 WR?

The thing is our O coordinator is from that system. So it shouldn't be a stretch. And your are right, Smitty would be great in the slot as would Goodson. We actually have the personnel to run that system and with our running game could have a decent offense. That is why the present problems are so depressing to me. We wouldn't be awesome with our young guys but we could surely be better.

With Goodson, Smith, Lafell, and Gettis, I think we have the right weapons at receiver to run a system similar to the Patriots. I also think in a different system, Rosario could be quite a weapon.

However, for the Patriots system to work, there are two pieces that are simply more important than the receivers: The quarterback and coaching. At this point, we don't have the coaching to do what the Patriots do and our QB is a marked downgrade to put it nicely... however, I do think Clausen, if developed properly, does have the skill set for that type of offense.

Why do you ask him for advice on Clausen? Do you genuinely think he is an unbiased observer? He magnifies his mistakes and ignores everything else.
