Possible Smashmouth Tampa 2 Hybrid Defense?

Recommended Posts

Maybe Meeks and Fox put their Philosophies together and develop a hybrid defense. Hs anyone ever seem a Tampa 2 style defense with a freakish front four like ours (assuming we retain Pep)? We've got speed coming off of the ends and big Kemo and Lewis holding up the middle. I think maybe (if Fox is a smart man) cold get it right. What say YOU huddle?

I say that we're going to play a defensive scheme that looks a lot like the one we played last year. The difference will likely be in execution on the field, not necessarily playcalling or preparation. If the players execute better, then Meeks will look like a genius. If they don't or get worse, then the usual suspects will immediately call for his and Fox's jobs.

our front four is far from freakish even with peppers, and i doubt we keep peppers because his very high price and the fact that he doesn't want to play here

whatever our defense will be...the defensive line will need a lot more talent and depth than you think

It would just make since that two defensive minded coaches combine philosophies to create a dominate D. With that being done Fox would know that his defensive ideals would be in play along with the ideals of his DC. He wouldn't feel complelled to "take over" the defensive reigns. (ie. Trgovac). Did anyone know his defensive philosophy? I never knew. How did he study under? (trgovac i mean) he was just a random hire in my opinion. He just held Jack's Defense together to a point, and when it was his time to show off he had nothing to show. Thus the reason Fox took over and made him a puppet. Again that's just my thought.

Our front Four held some of the top rushers in the league under 100 yards this year. I meant freakish for a Tampa 2. I agree we need depth on the interior D-Line, but if we can keep Pep we should be okay there. I think with the right coach the secondary will be fine, same for the LBs. Dline is the main issue.

Freakish front four? At best, w/ Peppers, it was average this past season. Our average front four was a key reason Fox lame passive and zone (bending defense) doesn't work. CBs and Ss gets destroyed in those schemes w/ an average front 4 rush......which will be worse w/o Pep.

I really doubt we keep pep, if we keep him, his 17 million dollar cap hit will cripple us(we will probably lose gross) and his play could suffer from not being where he wants to be.

Intruigingly, Indianpolis for the last two seasons only had 28 and 30 sacks and yet had the 2nd best pass defence in yards (07) and the 6th best in yards and only 6 TDs given up (08). It seems that his schemes (or Dungys) are not solely reliant on generating pressure and that their zone concepts operate with or without a pass rush.

Baring in mind we had 23 and 37 sacks in the same two years and everyone here seems to think our pass rush is what let us down...

fox isn't smashmouth.

contrasting styles has been a big part of the problem, supposedly.

meeks was hired because his philosophies mesh with fox's, supposedly.

tampa2 done right can be fierce. done wrong it could look like what we had the last half of the season.

Agree on this point. When Del Rio left, there was only one potential replacement on Fox's radar and that was Jim Mora, Jr., who at that time was DC for San Francisco. When he got the HC gig in Atlanta, Fox chose Trgovac, which IMO was more of a fallback option than anything. I always thought Trgo was in over his head running the entire D, which is why I think he had a "change of heart" and bolted to the Packers to return to coaching the DL ( a position that he's much better suited for) rather than sign the extension the team allegedly offered him. Hopefully, the Panthers got this one right with hiring of Meeks, who is better suited for the DC position than Tgro ever was.

    • Him and Sanders are the only QBs I would consider in the first round. I won’t be upset if we take Sanders, unlike some people on the board. Both have potential to be really good NFL QBs if the teams can develop them.  But as we have seen teams are not willing or are unable to now properly develop rookie QBs.
    • I remember the last time we had a Cam at QB in Charlotte
    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
