Possible Smashmouth Tampa 2 Hybrid Defense?

Recommended Posts

Of course Fox is a smashmouth for lack of a better term Defensive coach. He wants to be able to stop the run more and put some pressure on the passer. Stopping the run to me is smashmouth. He wants to be able to stop the type of offense he likes to run.

Just because he wants to be doesn't mean he succeeds. Our defense was FARRR from smashmouth this year.

Smashmouth = steelers

Smashmouth = ravens

Not smashmouth = Panthers

You can't be both bend, but don't break and smashmouth. And if so, well, we really sucked at the whole smashmouth thing.

Maybe Meeks and Fox put their Philosophies together and develop a hybrid defense. Hs anyone ever seem a Tampa 2 style defense with a freakish front four like ours (assuming we retain Pep)? We've got speed coming off of the ends and big Kemo and Lewis holding up the middle. I think maybe (if Fox is a smart man) cold get it right. What say YOU huddle?

oldschool Tampa had a lot of front four/front seven talent. Chicago early under Lovie had a lot of front seven talent. Those were tough defenses.

It would just make since that two defensive minded coaches combine philosophies to create a dominate D. With that being done Fox would know that his defensive ideals would be in play along with the ideals of his DC. He wouldn't feel complelled to "take over" the defensive reigns. (ie. Trgovac). Did anyone know his defensive philosophy? I never knew. How did he study under? (trgovac i mean) he was just a random hire in my opinion. He just held Jack's Defense together to a point, and when it was his time to show off he had nothing to show. Thus the reason Fox took over and made him a puppet. Again that's just my thought.

good thoughts, but you're partially wrong.

Mora Jr was still with the 49ers in 2003. He went to the Falcons in 2004.

He had options, he strung us along and never had intentions of leaving. The 49er area press hated that little bastard.

I think Trgovac got a little too much flak for being a replacement coach. He was just fine in 2005 and 2006. Those were nothing like Del Rio's defenses - he had much better corner play, just as much pressure. Just as good everywhere. But the last two years weren't what they should've been.

The Tampa 2 relies on getting plenty of pressure with its front four especially since most times it doesn't rely on heavy blitzing particularly in a 4-3 set. Chicago did more blitzing out of their 3-4 but with linebackers playing zone you can all out blitz or you leave huge holes which are easily exploited by any decent quarterback.

But that is true of most zone coverages. Lack of quarterback pressure is a killer for zone defenses.
