Pep also has 7 defended passes to CJ's 1, but they've both hit the QB 18 times...

Don't get me wrong, I love me some CJ, but our system is setup in a way that is more beneficial to him (heavy rotation, switching sides, flat out rushing the passer every time) than Pep's dynamic role in Chicago... Pep doing more there shows that he is a more complete and well rounded player, regardless of the opinions of Panther homers...

Yeah, he makes a lot more money, but big deal... CJ might not even be a Panther next year because of that very thing...

EDIT to add link:

similar numbers, but only amateur analysts rely solely on paper numbers...

There is more value to a player than just his numbers, but many contracts are structured are the stats we're discussing, so it isn't just amateur analysts who consider them important...

Stars rarely have that many performance based incentives, while unproven players are given the opportunity to prove themselves through them...

Regardless of what Pep is doing, the whole defensive line is playing surprisingly well. We lost several veterans and didn't bring any high profile guys and they still do a solid job. I think Charles will do even better next year with more help and a few of the other guys will be great for depth when we actually do spend resources on improving the line. And somebody like Hardy, Landri, or Brown could develop into a consistent contributor.

CJ might not even be here next year...

I agree on Hardy, but we need some interior help badly, and some strong depth would be nice...

They have looked better due to an overachieving LB corps (mostly Beason), and an above average secondary...

Look at you cheering for a bear over a panther

I can cheer for them both equally...

Believe me, I've been wanting CJ to make up for the loss of Pep, and am glad that he and others are holding their own for the most part...

That doesn't mean I have to hate Pep though...

I wonder if most 49er fans had so much animosity for Jerry Rice when he left... or Joe Montana...

See, the thing about Peppers is, and this has been said in Chitown, that he makes the players around him better. Kinda like how Smitty used to get double-teamed all the time, it opens it up for others. Good for Peppers getting all that loot, good for the Bears at 8 wins, but Im not watching them week in & week out. Hell, if my little brother wasnt a Bears' fan, I wouldnt have any interest in that team at all. But I do watch CJ closely, as well as Hardy, Landri and the rest of this team, because theyre what matters to me...

Im a frim believer in 'Things will get worse before they get better' and that is exactly where we are now. This is things at their worst, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the powers that be get their sh_t together so we know we will have some football in 9 months. Thats when things will be better...

Charles Johnson has definitely played like a top 10 DE this year. He consistently wins one-on-one match ups and has started to get doubled a lot more if you watch.

The Panthers better pay this man- if they don't, someone will...

As far as the comparisons to Peppers, CJ will never have the extraordinary freakish atheletic talent Peppers does (I don't know if any DE does), but CJ in my opinion has the potential to be better than Mike Rucker over his career.

Greg Hardy is the most freakish athlete at DE the Panthers have had besides Peppers. He still does not have quite the athletism Peppers does, but he compares the closest to Peppers.

If they can upgrade at DT, I think the Panthers can have a dominant D-Line again in a couple of years given the talent and depth at DE.

CJ/Greg Hardy/and Everette Brown rotating in could be as good as Peppers/Rucker/Wallace in my honest opinion, but their overall production will have to come with have better DT's.

How do they compare on QB pressures? Sacks and tackles are important, but pressures are also a significant measure of a DE's effectiveness.

P.S. just so you know where I'm coming from, I would LOVE to find out CJ is comparable on pressures.

PFF is usually pretty good with pressures as I have seen their stats backed up by other media sources.

2010 Pre Week 15

Peppers (464 Pass rushes) - 8 Sacks, 12 Hits, 34 Pressures, 5 BPs, 31 Solo Tckls, 33 Def Stops

Johnson (385 Pass rushes) - 9 Sacks, 7 Hits, 46 Pressures, 1 BP, 43 Tckls, 43 Def Stops
