A new challenger for the #1 pick approaches: 3-11 Broncos

The Broncos are already pretty set at QB with The Golden Calf of Bristol and Orton. They have the veteran and they have the rookie. If they did get the pick, they would probably want A.J. Green anyways. If they did, they wouldn't be able to trade down much further than our spot to get him. We would be in the driver's seat regardless if the Broncos picked up the 1st overall. The fanbase would freak out if they took a QB with a Top 25 pick and then followed it up by taking another one with the 1st overall before the last one even had a suitable audition. Especially one with the popularity of The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Even further, Luck might not declare if a team with the 1st overall had a QB already in place. Slotting is highly important in terms of promised money.... but hey, you never know.

I am going to try to enjoy the last 2 games of the year and let the rest decide itself as fate dictates.

Good points. Unless one of the Top-5 prospects really impresses the Broncos, I can see them trading #1 away and that's only if they get it. But really as you inferred, all we can do is be patient and wait. You never know what will happen and I'm still not trying to get my hopes up for anything or body in particular.

This has crossed my mind, but not being on the inside I don't know if teams think this way or not.

Coaches and players are never promised next season. How hard of a sell to the Atlanta players and staff do you think it would be to get orders from above to lose on purpose when they've had such a great season? These players play on 50% pride and 50% talent. There is no way on God's green earth that a team that has Super Bowl aspirations even REMOTELY considers the NFL draft to be even of minuscule importance in the grand scheme of things. They're trying to figure out ways to win football games, not lose them on purpose. The mere thought is an exhibition of ignorance regarding how NFL teams approach football games.

If you asked Richardson himself if he would trade the first overall pick for wins in the final two weeks of the season, he would slap you in the face for suggesting he wouldn't take the wins without even thinking twice. Same for John Fox and the coaching group. Same for everybody that has a spine enough to ever be involved with the NFL. You can't make it up there without a sac full of piss and vinegar and a total hatred for losing. That is the fuel teams use to win.

what would have to happen for the panthers to play the falcons secondaries in the last week? wouldnt they be fighting for the number one seed even if they beat the saints?

No No No... Once again... If the Falcons beat the saints next week they clinch the #1 Seed in the NFC no matter what anyone else does.

If the lose they will HAVE to beat us OR have the saints lose to the buccs to win the division and not be a wildcard team.

No way in hell that happens. No way that a team that may be the 1st overall seed in the conference lays down for a 2-12 team over something as ridiculous as draft position over a player that may not even declare. We're not talking about the football equivalent of LeBron James here.

Any coach that had that clear of an agenda would be fired on the spot.

"Yes, we're in great position to make a Super Bowl run..... but DAMN I just want to stick it to those Panthers and lose on purpose".

Teams that have already clinched always stress the importance of not developing bad football habits as a result of apathetic play in order to not get hurt in the final few games of the year. If you rest on your laurels for two consecutive weeks, with the bye week included, then you're most certainly going to be knocked off your pegs when the real games start back up.

There is a reason that wild card teams usually have a lot of success. It's because they've been playing playoff games since Week 13 most of the time. Any coach irresponsible enough to pull back on the reigns of his team in order to not get anybody hurt deserves to, and most often does, lose before they reach the Super Bowl.

Saints rested their starters last year, lost 3 straight to end the regular season and won the Super Bowl. If they have HFA clinched, they WILL go ultra-soft on us. Mike Smith is a very intelligent guy.

There is a difference between resting your starters and laying down, as you implied they might consider. They will not consider it. If they let that idea even cross their minds, they've already lost the battle. At this time of year, when you may have a legit chance to win it all, you look at your team and your team only. I doubt Mike Smith even knows we're in position to pick last overall. He probably just knows we're not having a good season and doesn't worry himself any further. He has his own football team to run and they're playing for a lot higher stakes than we are.

I have never in my life heard of an NFL team intentionally laying down to another team to prevent them from drafting higher. In this league, you only have 16 games before the playoff start. You can't afford to waste a damn one of them as opportunities to learn something about your squad or else you're going to be unprepared.

Drew Brees sat out all of ONE game in the Super Bowl season for the Saints. In the final three games of the season, in which you claim the Saints were supposedly letting off the gas, he attempted 45 passes against Dallas and 37 against Tampa before taking the Carolina game off. Who else do you claim that they protected?
